Sending off the wrong player

Neither player are to serve a ban

O-C would have got off on appeal anyway - as ball going wide.

Interesting different approaches from Graham Poll (Pro video) and UEFA's Pedro Pinto (more eyes). I'm Pro video. as Poll stated, it's no different to what all the fans in the ground with access to vid have and can see in 5 secs!

Technology has to be the way to go, I'm yet to see a decision made by the penalty area refs. They missed the Henry handball amd have bottled plenty of penalty calls in Europe.

Oh I don't know maybe a 3 match ban. Would Thisbe ok with you?

A 3 match ban for a genuine mistake? Seems harsh to me. If he'd missed the pen I'd have thought he was liable for punishment as that would show he wasn't aware of rules. But I think it's been blown out of performance. I don't think it had any influence on the result. Much worse performances from refs recently. Including Foy.

Especially Foy!

So its OK as long as someone walks . If the ref had seen the incident which I don't think he did for whatever reason he has to be 100% sure before sending someone off. ==They do look the same they are dressed in the same kit but Ox had #15 on his back.==if they reviewed sendings off at half time it could have been sorted. ==He was informed by the players he had got the wrong man but still went ahead and sent Gibbs off thats careless. == If you want to spend your cash to watch the ref that's up to you it takes all kinds. ==Personally I dont give a dam what pundits think.

if he'd sent nobody off, or not feign the pen. That for me would be him making a big mistake. Re the numbers. I find this point irrelevant as Ox back was away from him so he wouldn't have spotted number. Also, Jose himself said his assistant thought it was arteta. So numbers wouldn't of helped their either. I don't pay money to watch refs, but I also don't think that they're always as much to blame as people care to think. Gotta blame someone when your teams loses I guess. As to not caring what pundits think hey that's cool. But I'd imagine a fair few people respect ex proffesionals opinions. As they've been in situations and understand better than us fans the pressure of the modern game.

Football is not a sport that allows for natural breaks in play to allow a video referral system to be used IMO

I agree it's a lot more fast paced. But this incident at least occurred prior to a penalty so could have been corrected instantly.
Most throw-ins, goal kicks, free kicks, penalties, corners take for ever. Seem to remember the time a ball is in play is about 60 minutes.:(

To be fair to Marriner, Gibbs and Oxlaide-Chamberlain do look like each other.

they didn't see it. they just guessed. the ox had to drag himself up off the ground after tipping it around the post. the ref and linesman both couldn't have lost track of who it was. neither spotted it which is baffling as they both had a good view.

"must have been the full back"

why didn't he walk over and talk to his linesman. when all the players were going nuts telling him he got the wrong man, why didn't he consult every official. he didn't need to rush it. he could have changed the decision before play resumed.

absolute farce!

gibbs should have told him, speak to your officials before you send me off. I am not leaving the pitch. you will get in more trouble than I will if I leave.

Jose was talking about the assistant standing next to him on the halfway line 60yds away. ==He needs specsavers if he thinks Arteta looks like Ox Chain. ===Ox had his back to him yes but its not Burtons window the ref must watch the player as he moves to identify his number when he gets back to his feet. ====The ref completely ignored the player when he was told "It was me not Gibbs " I am sorry but that is the refs fault. ==== Buy the way I am not an Arsenal fan. I am a Liverpool and just a football fan!.====I do think the ref was let down by his other officials the assistant on that side was right in line but never flagged., but the ref had a clear view One of them should have seen the number on his shirt when he stood up,=== but my honest opinion is he thought Gibbs is the left back it must have been him and just guessed that's not good enough .==== We all make mistakes but I have to explain myself after a mistake.==== I think they would get more respect if they explained to us the way they got to this decision.=== Who seen what and what info the ref was given to come to the sending off. ====But I don't think they will do you.? As for the ex pros I think Wrighty is a little biased .===Ask Jose he complained all pundits are ex Liverpool players and he has a point.

He has been asked to explain it though, and he said himself he made a mistake. I'm not sure what reasoning he can give for it. He needs new glasses, he's a racist and they all look the same? I suppose the honest answer would be he was swayed to the decision by the Chelsea appeals and took a punt that it was a defender.

Re the pundits. I think it's because the tv shows generally want winners on the programmes and Liverpool have quite a few of them at the right age for tv work. As coverage grows they are branching out. Soccer saturday only has neutral pundits on the games. Of course that doesn't stop them butting in.

The he only reason I can see he ignored Ox was that he thought it was Gibbs so thought he was lying.

No it's not. A lot of players at best try and gain an advantage where they can, and at worst dive, fall over when hardly touched and appeal for all decisions even when they know it should go against them. And there is very little respect for refs in football from players, managers and even some pundits. How often do we hear managers always picking out one contentious decision the ref made if their team has lost just to deflect the blame onto the ref and questioning their competence? To be honest I am more surprised when it does not happen nowadays.

So you can't expect refs, after facing this for game after game, to believe what a player says to them when for the rest of the game they are constantly trying to gain at times an unfair advantage through their actions. Yes it's a sad state of affairs, but players and managers have kind of brought in on themselves.

Sorry but what advantage would Ox gain by getting himself sent off.? I understand your point about the crap refs put up with but you cant defend this decision . ==At the end of the day the ref was wrong but we will never find out why as they just wont tell us.

Be honest if you played football and one of your team was about to be sent off would you tell the ref "IT WAS ME" if it meant you would be sent off why would you lie. ==He might of admitted to making a mistake but how did he get to that decision . ====we can look forward to lots of Man U pundits in the near future then... Hope not.== I think we really need a clampdown on players surrounding the ref he has a job to do and needs a little bit of thinking time . The Captain ONLY should be able to confront the ref as to why he has made a decision anyone else should be booked and no half measures enforce it with video after the game if need be.

The only logical reason I can offer is that maybe the ref thought a midfielder was offering himself up so a defender could stay on the pitch. Re pundits, I hated Neville as a persona, quality RB. BUt I think he's a great pundit.
