I know many of you dont like using statistics, and also many of you do, but for those of you that use the Scoresaver system how do you compare with their average/target predictions for your h/c. I have bought Scoresaver recently and have put in my last 20 rounds.

My h/c is now 26.1 but when you look at my Scoresaver statistics they dont make sense, I know I have got to reduce my penalty shots, but that is very difficult around my course because of the many hazards. 14 with water, 6 with OOB plus all the trees and thick rough. But how do compare?

TARGET... MY STAT…..H/C
Fairways 20% 40% 16
GIR 5% 11% 20
Putts per round 39 33.28 15
Sand Saves 6% 17% 10
Birdie Conv 7% 10% 22
Par Scrambles 9% 6% 28+
Driving Dist (Yards)140 222 11...av prob nearer 210
Penalties per round 2.6 4.5 28+

The figures that are brought up for you to compare are the handicap standard you are actually achieving based on SS2s assumptions.

My advice is at your hc don't worry too much about the par scrambles, birdie conversions or sand saves - or even the penalty shots. After all, look at Harrington's last two final rounds!

Do pay attention to GIR (this always correlates with a good score), putts and where you most often miss the green. My guess will be that you will be short much more often than long, so maybe go for the extra club?

If you get you drives hit and GIR down, your score will come down with it. Don't expect to hit all your targets and don't worry if they go up and down from round to round, just check them every 10 rounds/once a month.

It's about making 100 1% improvements, not 1 100% one.

One thing I will say is are you definitely marking correctly? i.e. on the fringe is not GIR, hitting the green with a provisional is not GIR, two yards off the fairway is not on the fairway etc. This may be afffecting your stats. (if not, please disregard!)

yes Gil I have, well I did when I was playing off a h/c26.

I'm sorry if my figures are confusing it looked better when I did it in a word doc.

The figure are my target (from Scoresaver) my actual results (from my 20 rounds) and finally what handicap I am playing to according to scoresaver.

So basically your stats suggest that you are normally playing to better than your handicap in all areas except up & downs & penalties.

So you can work on these:

Looks like you need to work on course management. ie where to place/aim the ball to avoid the hazards.

Basic example would be if a pond is on the right and no danger on the left. Tee it up on the right side of the tee box and aim for the left half of the fairway - that way you are hitting away from the water.

Do you go for dangerous shots over water when laying up is a better option? (I know I do!)

That's how I'd look at those stats.

I don't use scoresaver....not because I don't like it or even the h'cap standard business. I just keep all the important info in my head or written down on the card.

I had a nice, steady 81 (SSS 71) two days ago and compared it to my last visit to the same course 18 months ago.

This time I had 3 more putts, but I hit more greens (kind of obvious) and far more fairways (all but 2 ).

Homer mentioned you can "tweak" the program to reflect your idea of where you should be. Penalty strokes and wayward shots kill scores....this is where you should initially be looking to improve your scores.

SS is brilliant for working stuff out, no doubt. Don't pay too much notice of the stats though until you see and know-in-yourself where things are not right.

Here's my stats for this year. GIR is the crucial one for me. (Hcap: 13)

Fairways Hit: 45% (Hcap Std: 14)

Putts Per Round: 33.10 (Hcap Std: 15)
Sand Saves: 9% (Hcap Std: 20)
Birdie Conversion: 13% (Hcap Std: 16)

Funkyfred,
How would you class your game?
What are your strengths and weaknesses?
Do they tie in with SS?

For myself: I have a good long game, hit a decent distance and am generally quite accurate. But I know I struggle with getting up & down and don't convert enough opportunities.

I can't remember my stats but know that SS suggests my long game is of a low single figure handicapper but my short game is that of a high teens handicapper.

So do the handicap standards for your game tie in with those on SS like mine do?

I've not been using it for long, but here's what it says about me so far.

Putting is what I need to work on most, but also (which isn't totally apparent from the stats) is getting closer from 100yds in, as my birdie chances are mostly from medium or long range.

I personally wouldn't worry too much about the fairways hit stat either. As long as my ball is in play and I have a good shot to the green I'm not bothered if I'm in the fairway or first cut of rough.

Fairways Hit: 45% (Hcap Std: 14)
Greens In Reg: 41% (Hcap Std: 7)
Putts Per Round: 34.86 (Hcap Std: 17)
Sand Saves: 14% (Hcap Std: 12)
Birdie Conversion: 4% (Hcap Std: 28+)
Par Scrambles: 27% (Hcap Std: 10)
Driving Distance: n/a (Hcap Std: n/a)
Penalties Per Round: 1.05 (Hcap Std: 11)

Rounds Recorded: 11
Date Range: All Time: 01/01/50 to 27/08/09

Hi Gil

It’s the penalties that are killing me, (as RGDave said) 4.5 Per round!!! If I could reduce those I am sure I could get down to 20 even possibly 18. As for my course management, actually I don’t think it’s too bad. We have one hole with a ditch at 195 yards of the whites, now that’s difficult for me to clear so I lay up, and then a pond just in front of the green which means I can not go for the green in two, in fact we have two like that which I actually try and play as a par five, the good thing is I do get 2 shots on both of these holes.
Of course my handicap will tell you that I am not the most consistent, 2 or 3 erratic drives per round and a couple of fairway disasters, lets call them mis-cues are what rack up the penalties. The thing is as I stated in my OP the course does punish me ridiculously.

Toonarmy

My stats are correct, missed one green on Saturday by the width of the ball, putted up and made a par saver. Also missed a fairway by the size of my size 11’s
If you don’t keep correct stats, then there’s no point in keeping them in the first place.

SS2

Your stats are very similar to the Scoresaver stats, that are what I am trying to see, if people are achieving their figures.

Region 3

Again like SS2 you are quite close to your h/c, obviously holding a couple of your birdie putts are going to improve your putts and birdies conversion rate.
Oh how I wished I had your penalties per round.

Would either you or SS2 say your courses were difficult? My course is 6345 yards of the yellows and 6603 of the whites (both par 72) So it’s not really a course you can take out a 7 iron and just poke your way down the fairway.

Here's mine, I like SS2 ( not you buddy, your software ;-) )

Fairways Hit: 55% (Hcap Std: 9)
Greens In Reg: 41% (Hcap Std: 7)
Putts Per Round: 34 (Hcap Std: 15)
Sand Saves: 14% (Hcap Std: 12)
Birdie Conversion: 10% (Hcap Std: 22)
Par Scrambles: 15% (Hcap Std: 20)
Driving Distance: n/a (Hcap Std: n/a)
Penalties Per Round: 1.0 (Hcap Std: 10)

With my handicap being 11.8, its pretty obvious where the work needs to be applied !!

Do I need £40.00 worth of software to tell me that ? Probably not, but I do like a good bit of geeky analysis !!

Couldn't agree with you more! However, there was a heated debate about putts and it was split between 'on the green is on the green' and 'if you used your putter, it's a putt', so thought it best to check.

My course is about the same length as yours and believe me, you'd be surprised how easy it is to get around never using more than a 4i.

Valuable as the stats are (and I think SS2 is superb), just remember that they don't necessarily tell the whole story. Just look at the Ashes stats for a perfect example of this.

The target/handicap standards on SS are very useful but can be adjusted.

Could you ask your club pro to give you recommended stats for your ability around your course. Therefore using SS but with the target stats more specific to yourself?

My coach told me to change my target stats, he reckoned I should aim to get the same as the 50th best player in each category on the European Tour. As, apparently, I'm too good to be aiming for an 8 handicappers targets.

funkyfred

My course is 6339 off yellows and 6641 off the whites, so very similar to yours.

Although my fairways hit isn't great, I don't very often stray too far from them so avoid a lot of penalties off the tee, which is where I'd guess most occur.

Things start to go wrong for me off the tee when I try to hit the ball hard rather than just swing nice. I'm learning slowly.

When I was at school I used to play with some kids a few years younger than me. One of them didn't hit very far, about 150 with his driver, but everything was dead straight and he was always one of the better scorers (normally low 80's)

Key stats for Martin Bedborough (Hcap: 11)

Fairways Hit: 47% (Hcap Std: 13)
Greens In Reg: 29% (Hcap Std: 11)
Putts Per Round: 33.31 (Hcap Std: 15)
Sand Saves: 20% (Hcap Std: 9)
Birdie Conversion: 14% (Hcap Std: 14)
Par Scrambles: 22% (Hcap Std: 13)
Driving Distance: n/a (Hcap Std: n/a)
Penalties Per Round: 1.00 (Hcap Std: 10)

Rounds Recorded: 39
Date Range: Current Year: 01/01/2009 to 27/08/2009

What have I learnt

Well my putts were over 36 at the start of the seasond and so will obviously continue to make the overall figure high but I'm definitely getting better on the greens

Other than that I'm just a little over where I should be in most categories and so in general terms its a fair reflection of my game at present

Firstly (and importantly) make sure that you are recording your penalty shots correctly. If you go out of bounds and hit three off the tee, that is 1 penalty shot not 2. Ok, you are playing three off the tee but after hitting your second drive you've hit the ball twice and incurred one penalty shot.

Is my course difficult? My stats are split between the two courses at my course (www.cawder.co.uk) and strangely enough my GIR stats are better on the "big" course, probably because the greens are bigger.
