RYDER CUP CAPTAINS

Since 1948, Ireland has provided more players to respective Ryder Cup teams than any other country, with the exception of England. Strange as it may seem, an Irish professional has yet to be granted the honour of being captain ! WHY ?

In the recent past, some of the Irish players (Smyth, Darcy, O'Connor, Walton, Rafferty) etc have just not been of the calibre needed, but nowadays, Harrington, Clarke and possibly McGinley are much better candidates and some of them are good prospects in the next 10 years or so. McDowell, as a major winner, is also a likely candidate some years after that.

I'm not sure of Harrington despite his ability as a player. For me he doesn't have the media touch that any captain needs.

Because they are all far too good at dodging that job. I wouldnt want to captain a team, it seems you just cant win regardless.

I think Clarke is nailed onto be a future captain. Mcginlay?, maybe but there are others a similar age who may get the nod

Faldo knew how to use the media in the same way Monty does. Not sure McGinley and Harrington have that same ability

But it was Faldo who had the ultimate faux pas with his infamous 'sandwich list' ... he didn't handle the press well on that occassion.

I hate to say it but Monty has pulled a master stroke bringing Clarke on board.

Having caught up with Monday night's Golfing World last night, they had a feature on the "Countdown to the Ryder Cup". I believe it's the same thing being shown on Sky Sports but cut up into small parts to fill Golfing World's hour slot.

Anyway...last night it focused on the Captains and some other parts. I have to say, as grumpy as Monty is 99% of the time, I can't think of anyone better (right now) to captain our side to victory. Monty lives and breathes the Ryder Cup and you have to believe that he's going to be doing everything in his power to bring it home.

Watching it got me really jacked up for it to start. I can't wait.

As it turned out, No, but he could reasonably have been expected to be able to cope with the media considering how long he'd been working with them.
