Playing with a man today who marked his ball on the green with one of the plastic spike ball markers. Marker about 20 feet from the hole. Went to the opposite side of the whole to look at he line. Couldnt see he marker. So went back to the marker, and put a long tee behind it, then went back tothe other side of the hole to study his line. Saw whatever, went back, pulled out the tee, replaced his ball, and putted out.
Legal ? Or use of an artificial device to help his putting ? He didnt remove the marker to mark his ball with the tee. The tee was placed exclusively to study the line, and plastic marker left there too.
(why he didnt leave the ball there to look at the line I am not sure. This just seemed to be his method. It was the only green he went back and placed the tee though. Normally he could see the marker).

Don't see a problem.

It's not on his line of play (see definitions and 10.2 b (2)

It's not a general issue with use of Equipement (4.3)

The only problem is that it's in the wrong forum.

Surprisingly, there is one called 'Rules of Golf' that is specially for questions on the Rules of Golf ;)
