Just been reading a fairly rubbish novel based on golf ("The man who inherited a golf course" if you're interested. I don't recommend it.) But the rules & procedures described really grated on me - that's wrong, that's wrong too etc. But then I thought, they are wrong now, but may have been correct at the time the book was written in 1993.

So, can anyone say if the following two examples were ever correct

Grass cuttings piled for collection must be marked as GUR to be considered for relief under GUR
A player can only accept advice from his own caddie (and not his partner's)

And more importantly, can anyone direct me to a good source of info that documents the changes in rules over the years. (As it's obvious that some older players remember old rules which have been superceded)

GUR didn't enter the rules until 1950, at which point it's definition required everything to be marked to be GUR.

rule 4 .1 in the rules over the period 1933'ish (1925 - 1950) clearly includes the partners caddie, and it remains that way in the revised structure 1950 code.

1992-1996

1. Defs: Ground under repair' is any portion of the course so marked by order of the Committee or so declared by its authorised representative. It includes material piled for removal and a hole made by a greenkeeper, even if not so marked. (That def as added in 1952 and has not changed since.)

2. 8-1:
A player may ask for advice during a stipulated round from only his partner or either of their caddies. (A player can accept advice from anyone.)

Thanks all. Going to have to check out the ruleshistory site.

And sadly, pedant that I am, I'm going to have to read the rotten book again, just to spot how many errors there actually were. The couple of examples above were just ones that sprang to mind

i heard the R&A is bringing in a rule about equipment, only those in cat or 2 will be allowed to have the latest gear or play prov balls,no one over 21 can wear load mouth clothes and anyone with a gut hanging over their belt must wear spanx to avoid them not looking athletic as golf in now an Olympic sport, the mutton dressed as lamb clause has now been introduced as the women have become members they should not give false hope from 50 yds away to senior men.

Being drunk by 7.30pm is a bit keen!
