Rory Dumps Club in Lake

Club throwing is childish at the best of times, but the reason he gave for it was even more childish.
I really don't see the point in fining pro athletes, it's a complete waste of time, like it's going to be a deterrent to somebody that earns millions a year.

Shouldn't have done it - not big or clever
Did it
Apologised
Move on.

Better to take frustrations out on a club than on the course....whilst it was incredibly funny at the time, Sergio giving a bunker a good thrashing a couple of years ago was far worse.

Sod fining them, make them fetch it before the continue with the round.

with some of them gators in Florida. He will only do it once.

Some people need to get off their high horse. Big deal, he threw a club into a lake!!!! Its not like he told a camera man to "f" off

if its not a big deal why did he apologise for his inappropriate actions?

Because I'll say he was told too!!!!

But who cares.

Andy Murray throws his bats all the time and kicks advertising boards!!! Anything said then? No!
Rory gets a slating because golf is full of pompous, stuck up, sad toffs. many of which have never even kissed a girl!!!!!!

Now you're looking like the 12 year old!

When I saw it and started this post I must admit to thinking it was a tad funny and a little bit silly for a professional to let his temper get the better of him.

His later comments were just ill judged - he'd have been better to admit he was a bit annoyed.

The Sky guys were going on about the fine which, in all honest, will not be significant enough to actually make a difference though its a good idea that it goes to a PGA charity!

Applying fines to these guys whose appearance money is so high is stupid and since they don't pay for their clubs either there's no real penalty.

If the PGA and European Tour really think throwing clubs (or any bad behaviour, slow play, not shouting Fore etc) warrants a penalty it should be a 1 competition/match ban (like football). We'd soon see behaviour change!

Agree. But dont' forget there was also all that furore when Garcia threw a shoe http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sport/golf/475169.stm

I agree McIlroy is much more of a role model these days and#1 and so should be setting a precedent and example and for the most part he seems to be doing that. I wouldn't to see him or any player do it regularly but as a one of sign of how much it means is refreshing. Nothing wrong with caring

In the heat of the moment golf has made me really angry and I'm normally a-mild-mannered-wouldn't-say-boo-to-a-goose-type. It can really cause an irrational rush of the red mist

I remember that for a long time back in the 80s the opening titles to Question of Sport had someone missing a short putt in a big situation whereupon and in an obvious rage he put the putter over his knee and snapped it in two. Looked on Youtube but couldn't find it but did find this

Someone who I once considered a friend and royally shafted me was a good golfer. One of the lads was playing with him for the first time and my ex mate was giving him "tips". However his game was suffering whilst giving tips. After nine holes his head had gone.
On the tenth at Rufford he said "it's gonna be a differant back nine to the front nine" he proceeded to put his drive in the lake. He launched his driver which proceeded to get stuck up a tree. His playing partners took the mick for the rest of the round.

PS if I see ex pal again he's having a 5 iron around the earhole.

I think when golfers hit a bad shot they should just smile, high 5 their playing partners and then skip along nicely

How dare he throw a club and show a bit of personality! He should be like his fellow Robo Pros and show no emotion......ban him for life I say!!
you never saw Seve, Jack, Arnie, sergio, Reid, Monty, Faldo, Tiger then

I've seen too much of tiger being a jack ass as I can handle, on and off the course.

As for the other guys.....I'm too young to have seen any of those guys sorry.

But I do think people need to lay off rory, the guy hit a bad shot and threw a club. Big deal, he didn't hurt anyone what so ever did he?!

Just his own image. Some will like it and warm to him, others will add it to their list of reason not to like him and the rest will simply shrug and carry on not really caring.

He shouldn't have done it and will get sanctioned by the powers that be but in the long run it'll mean nothing and just be another thing on his "highlight" reel.

He's already had an influence on others so lets hope we don't hear of fishermen being knocked out by juniors this summer! ;)

As an 11 Handicapper, i've lobbed a club down a fairway.

I can only imagine how frustrated i'd get being that good, and things not working like i've planned

I recall both Ben Crenshaw and Paul Azinger snapping clubs intentionally, not sure if it was putters or irons though.

Was petulant and unnecessary from Rory, just ramming the club back into the bag with force or just whacking it into the turf should be enough to lose some rage, chucking it in a lake is potentially dangerous to other people or aquatic/bird life, say he hit a black throated diver as it re-surfaced, he's be public enemy number one with the RSPB!
