I don't very often take the train because it usually costs more than the equivalent car journey, especially if there is more than one person, and you don't have to pay another small fortune to park your car at a station, or take taxis. The downside is sitting in traffic jams on our inadequate and poorly maintained roads.

If the railways were cheap and reliable, I would use them far more than I do now. If more people used the train, the pressure on the roads would be reduced. What says it all is that even new railway carriages and engines seem to be transported by road!

you are right, but if you work in the city, none are practical. Its the unreliability thats the biggest issue, the price isnt that big a problem.

I work in the smoke as well travelling in from Kent (around 40 miles). Annual season ticket is 4K. I only use the ticket to go to work so excluding BH and holidays I've calculated my journey cost at £8.79 each way. Which I don't think is to bad. Reliability isn't to bad either (don't use Southern) last time my train was either cancelled or over 15 mins late was probably a 3 or 4 months ago

Pretty much the same as me, except I am on the great northern route. Our trains are getting quite old and unreliable, we are getting some new ones later this year though so I we are told.

Glad I dont need to use trains for work, does feel like a rip off (compared to a similar cost to drive) the odd occasions I do use trains.

Two days back at work and it's been fun on the trains. Cost has gone up 12% from last year. Have we seen 12% improvement? Wednesday's morning peak time express train was 15 minutes late and 3 carriages (normally 6). Evening service was cancelled and the next one was reduced to 2 carriages.
This morning the express was on time but 3 carriages again and people couldn't actually get on it was that full. Next one was 10 minutes late and then held up for 10 minutes en route.
I really feel Abellio are proving value for money... 😂

I live in Surrey and work in London. Monthly ticket is £300, which I think is really expensive.
Am going to move this year to Cambridgeshire and an annual is going to be something like £4800. Can't wait!!!

How many miles is the train journey and rough cost per journey?

As the crow flies it is 19 miles from my house to my office. Not sure how many miles it is on the track.
Assuming I make 40 journeys a month (20 work days commuting both ways), it costs £7.50 per journey.
