There was a post on here a few months back by Golf Donkey about being fed up with football:

Now at the time I agreed with him but in recent weeks I have seen some amazing goals and this weekend provided some of the most exciting games I’ve seen in ages. With the premiership becoming closer I am once again engrossed in the game. Professional Golf seems to be going the other way with the FedEx Cup and the ridiculous amount of money involved! Should I be concerned about the state of our professional game because at the moment I’d rather watch football?

Paul09 know what you mean - went to see the Blues defeat Wycombe Wanderers in the Carling Cup last night and it was great. Can't quite seem to get the same enthusiam for the start of the golf season.

It's a bit like the start of the football season in that there doesn't seem to have been a long enough break - so you can't just enjoy the off-season and reflect, for instance on Harrington's win etc, and look forward to the new season. Instead they are already up and running - just seems a bit weird!

Having said that i am itching for the Masters....!!

TrueBlue you must have been very proud at watching your £100000 million boys crush League Two opposition. After bagging two last night against that defence I think it's safe to say that Shevchenko is now looking like a snip at £31m.

I think your point about the lack of a real break between the seasons is a very good one though. After all, they say that absence makes the heart grow fonder and golf doesn't seem to have any kind of break anymore - much like football in 2006 when the World Cup extended the season.

However, most golfers are far better role models than footballers and the game is played in a much better spirit so Golf Donkey's sentiments from a few months back still ring true.

I get very little enjoyment these days watching the Premiership, watching Chelsea v Arsenal is like watching two world select 11s playing an exhibition match, it doesn't seem to mean anything any more. I'd rather watch the hackers in the SPL giving it their all for a team they love.

No matter how much money is involved in golf the top players will still be playing for pride. It's not like Tiger, Phil, Vijay et al. need any extra cash anyway. I agree with TrueBlue - Absolutely can't wait for the Masters.

True up to a point MacMachattie. But I do once remember an interviewer asking smarmy Phil why he didn't have more of a global schedule. The answer? "Why would I want to travel all around the world to play for less money than I can do every week in the States?" - or words to that effect.

However much money they seem to have, I don't think you can rule cash out as a motivating factor for even the world's best week-in, week-out.
