My dream growing up was the same as most golf obsessed teenagers which was to turn pro and make my living from playing the game I loved. Unfortunately a lack of opportunities and eventually a lack of commitment from myself then going into full time employment doing an apprenticeship at 16 golf started to take a back seat and the dream was forgotten about.

Fast forward 17 years and with a renewed enthusiasm for the game I am going to have a go at making the dream a reality, hopefully proving to myself and to others that with the right approach, some hard work and a bit of good fortune that it is possible, even when considered too old in sporting terms and not having had a glittering amateur career before becoming pro.

I’m not giving myself and deadlines or dates for milestones, my plan is to fit in my practice sessions, exercise, and play around home life and work and see where the journey takes me. If I achieve the goal in the next couple of seasons it would be awesome, but if it takes another 20 years then so be it I will keep at it and I hear the seniors tour is pretty competitive! Whatever the outcome at least I will be back out playing the game that I get so much enjoyment from, and if I make some new friends or inspire anyone to get back out on the course along the way all the better.

I've made a blog to keep track of my experience and hopefully keep me pushing forward and keep me accountable for my progress. Would be nice to get any input and thoughts from others that are passionate about the game.

Here is the website for my blog if anyone is interested in following.

look forward to speaking to you all.

P.S. my handicap is 5 just now.

Don't they say the gap between a scratch amateur and a tour player is bigger than the gap between a 28 handicapper and a 10 handicapper;) Best of luck, and make sure you 'enjoy the journey' as they apparently say on The X Factor.

Certainly the gap between a 5hcp and a Senior tour player is enormous!

Can't knock a guy for trying or having a dream but I can think of many much more achievable dreams

Having a dream is no biggie, I manage it most nights, wet, weird, strange, nice, frightening, you name it, done the lot. ;)

Good luck.

I had the same dream at one point. Make some decent cash whilst keeping the game in order then turn pro and go on the snrs tour with the bread knife travelling as a retirement bucket list kind of thing.

Then the snrs tour went and ruined it by having loads of good players play in it - topped up with major winners and ex Ryder cup players every other week. How bloody inconsiderate! :(

That's one side of the problem....getting to ( about) +4 being the other :)

As to the OP; the real downside to such an approach to the game at any time is that it's difficult to get real enjoyment or satisfaction without success ie it can become hard to enjoy the sport for what it is.

“Never give up on a dream just because of the time it will take to accomplish it. The time will pass anyway.”

Good luck...

Edit - welcome :-)

Thanks for the welcomes, I'm under no illusion how difficult the task ahead of me is and most will think I'm aiming for the unachievable but there is only one way to find out if it really is out of reach and that's to get up off my backside and give it a go.

Only then will I know for sure if I am good enough or not, either way I will be happy. If I make it then I have accomplished something I have been getting told I cannot do and has been my ambition since I first picked up a club 25 years ago, if I don't then I will have spent a hell of a lot of time playing the game I am so passionate about. I don't really see a downside here. I should also add I'm not expecting or aiming to play with the big boys in the European tour or anything, the ambition is to tee up on the first tee of a professional tournament as a professional. If and when I get to that point I will reevaluate.

Welcome, Watch Miracle on 17th Green for inspiration but ignore the neglecting your wife bit

Good luck

God I love this kind of ambition, we need more people like you in the world to inspire the rest of us.

Read 'Dream On' and 'The Golf of Your Dreams' if you haven't already.

Also 'Bounce' and 'The Talent Code'

If you need any help with the mental side of the game feel free to ask.

I would wish you luck but it would be more useful to wish you hard work, diligence and determination. Go for it.

Nice welcome ..
