Hi All,

I have regripped clubs before, I have watched the videos and seen how easy it is and NEVER made a good go of it. Sometimes its taken me over an hour to force a grip on. Now I am thinking its because I am a botch artist and dont have any of the right kit. I use very sticky double sided tape from the hardware store, the wifes nail vanish remover and no vice.

My question is, will this become much easier if I get a vise, rubber clamp, the right spirit and tape. I am going to have to regrip everything soon, I am not changing any clubs and am not going to spend £130 to have a pro do it.

Any advice welcome.

This is easy right? I have just been making it hard?

I always use tape I get from Gamola. I make sure I use plenty of white spirit both on the club shaft and in the grip. A cut away milk container is used to catch excess spirit and it can be poured back into the white spirit bottle at the end. Ease the grip on, line up and bobs her uncle. I could put a whole set of grips on in an hour so you must be doing something wrong at a basic level.

No need for a vice or rubber vice clamp, just proper tape and plenty of white spirit. Never failed yet :)

Alex, I haven't used double sided tape but have had no problems with regripping before. Not sure double sided is needed, just use the standard tape and lashings of white spirit - the grips will go on easily :)

I'm with others on this, I started doing this with ordinary double sided tape and it gave me all sorts of issues, I now use precut tape from Gamola and use plenty of white spirit because as its is cheaper you can flood inside the grip and the tape before sliding the grip on, and this should make it so much easier.

Another point, I bought one of the rubber vice grips and found them not very good. I solved the problem of holding the club by holding the club in a bench mate, or similar, that has the two wooden vice top plates that can be opened so you have a thicker and thinner width each end and with a towel in between this works perfectly for holding the club shaft firmly

I tried using double sided tape from a hardware store once & it was a struggle. Like already said, tape from Gamola. Plenty of white spirit in side the grip, pour out onto the tape that is on the shaft. Slides on easily.

Alex - I forked out a lot last year to get my grips done.

I have done 3 myself now using ordinary white spirit and tape that came with the grips.

In truth the most time consuming part of the whole process was getting the old grip off. If I was going to do a full set I would definetely invest in one of those stanley knives with a hook blade.

edit - I have one of these - which proved to be perfect for the job of holding the club.

Hurry up and become an expert Al, mine are close to needing doing too ;)

I just KILL Golf Pride New Decade Multicompounds but cant find anything I would rather have. Its strange not having purchased more irons before the grips ware out.... :D

Not a huge fan of white spirits, I bought some of the grip solvent from gamola. Smells 100% better. Bottle says its good for 14 grips, but I've done well over 20 grips and still have a 1/4 left.

Nail varnish remover....

DCB, maybe the tape I use is just too sticky... How are you supporting the club when you put the grip on?

I just ease the grip onto the end of the shaft and if there is any need to push it on I put the club head on the ground/floor and push down as I rotate the grip into place. Final adjustments for alignment carried out with club head on the ground.

£130 for a pro to do it? My local pro charges £2 a club. As long as you provide new grips. £30 for a complete set and non of he hassle or worry seems fair to me.

Found plenty of white spirit is the key inside grip and on tape.
Had similar problems to start but so much easier with more liquid solvent.
Rubber vice clamp and vice came in handy when I added extra layers of tape under grips not essential but as available at work made it a lot easier.

Just to add that I insert a tee peg into the hole in the top of the grip, about two-thirds fill the grip with solvent and give it a good shake. Then remove the tee peg and pour the solvent over the double-sided tape on the shaft, catching the excess in a container of some sort. Then the grip should slide on really easily. :)

I've changed quite a few sets of grips, all you need is some white spirit, kitchen roll, an aerosol lid, a short tee and 1/2 in paint brush.

Use proper grip tape put it on the club and remove the backing.

Put the tee in the top of the grip and pour some white spirit into it, shake it and then empty it into the aerosol lid and stand the grip on the tee on a flat surface.

Get the paint brush and use the white spirit you poured into the aerosol lid and paint the grip tape.

Take the tee out of the grip and while holding the club on the floor, line it up and push it on. Use the kitchen towel to wipe the goo away from the bottom of the grip and then twist the grip to line it up, making sure it is straight.

You can't use too much spirit and the biggest mistake most people make is to not use enough which causes the grip to bind before you can correctly line it up.

Leave the club overnight and jobs a good one.
