Reason for getting into golf

I remember as a 12 year old kid my dad trying to get me to play as he's played for years, but I had no interest as I was only ever into Football.
I also thought golf was just for old men!

Got to the age of 20 and a few of my mates played and when they went out for a round I felt I was missing out, so took it up.

Fast forward 20 years and here's me trying to get my 12 year old son into it and he's showing no interest......

It's the walking element which is good for your mental health, not the actual swing which puts a big strain on your body.
The body did not evolve to play golf, it's just that the bones and joints which act like levers to keep you upright also allow you to hit a golf ball with a club.
Gambling, tobacco and booze are still legal, but it's your life.
There are golfing widows out there. A small company I worked for went bust and part of the reason appeared to be the owner was always on the Forest of Arden.

I’d say golf has ruined less life’s than gambling, tobacco and booze

Don’t blame the game for people’s addictive personalities

By this logic we shouldn't do any sport at all. Rugby is no good as you get dumped on your arse or your head. Football's no good, you might sprain your ankle or break a leg.

As a kid i always enjoyed having a go on the pitch and putt at my local park and when we went to Southend etc. None of my family were interested or pushed me in to it at all.

When i was 13 me and a friend started going to a driving range (something to do) and it took off from there. 30 years later here i am.

Not saying that at all. I love football because it's in my DNA. Rugby is not. My dad and granddad were very keen on football. It's a risk you take.
Golf is mainly a participation sport, and for that you need a golf course. Not everyone has the coordination or interest to play. Those that join a club often find them unwelcoming.
Some reports I've had:
'The members wouldn't speak to us for 4 years'.
'I could play with members one day and the next day they wouldn't even speak to me'.
'The members can be a bit funny there - you need to part of the clique'.

That's not symptomatic of golf, that just a handful of people's experiences of a handful of clubs. If you join a club and it's like that, then leave and join a different one. Problem solved. It will always take a little time and patience at the beginning to get yourself known though.

Point I make is that private members courses are generally not inclusive or welcoming.
Especially if you are a woman, a young person or part of an ethnic minority.

Here are some examples from my area:
Large sign directs women to the entrance on the left (Copt Heath).
Women have separate clubhouse (Sutton Coldfield).
Women are not allowed to walk in front of the clubhouse (Little Aston).

I'm sure there are many other examples of gender discrimination, the obvious one being women are only allowed on the course at certain times.

Sutton Coldfield Ladies Golf Club is a separate entity to Sutton Coldfield Golf Club and whilst it may have been historically true that women were prevented from passing in front of the clubhouse at Little Aston that is no longer the case.

As for Copt Heath I believe that the sign to which you refer is directing lady golfers to their locker room. I presume that you do not have an issue with segregated changing facilities.

In view of your clear antipathy towards golf I might ask why you continue to post on this site.

Good point well made sir. I assume the previous post from our friend about "staggering" number of posts is aimed at myself LP and a few others. Fear not Stefanoic I am healthy and sound in body and mind. Golf has actually been a really positive release and good for my well being especially at times on my life when I was at a low with family issues or problems in work. I'd say it's a perfect release valve and better than simply sitting at home in silence or finding an answer in an empty beer glass. As for high post counts, what this forum is so good at is being a melting pot of opinion and while feelings may run high and spill over sometimes, there are for more positives than negatives and many forum members have helped others out in so many ways. With your negativity to this place and golf in general maybe both aren't for you?

So why are women at many private clubs only allowed on the course at certain times or certain days? Answer that one please.
The people who complained to me about their treatment were actually women. I was told by one woman that Laura Davies was ticked off at Little Aston by walking in front of the clubhouse and so it is not too historical.
Then there is the famous case of Muirfield voting against women members and only relenting because it would cost them.
Then there's:

It goes on and on. Nobody here can deny misogyny in golf, or that people with a non white skin have been discriminated against in golf.

Sorry but you initially were claiming golf Is bad for your health.. once that was shot down you move to sexism and racism in golf.. which is in all walks of life (doesn’t make it right.. it’s an issue that needs addressing on a national level)

You clearly have a chip on your shoulder about golf

Maybe get off a golf forum would be a help to get you over this obsession.

You don't have to apologize, but in the long run I believe that one vital ingredient could suffer, and that's the use of the imagination which can be stunted by too much of the same thing.

I was only taking issue with the strain the swing puts on the body. You might get away with it, but the like of Nicklaus who claimed to hit a 1000 balls a day clearly did not. Seve's back became so bad he had to hang upside down from the ceiling. Then there's Tiger.

Call it a pitch!

See if you can give up golf for a year. I'm sure you'll be happier.

I can 100% assure you that if I give up golf for a year I will be very unhappy and unstable considering golf is my release from stress and escape from the world

Even my doctor recommended golf to me as a great way to de stress

Which I’m sure medical professionals don’t know what their talking about...

I’ve got bad knees, and a bad shoulder but playing golf gets me out and about plus I get to meet up with guys from this forum a few times a year and I wouldn’t want that to stop!
