I am a Real Ale lover. I love the variety, flavour and seasonality of it. Lager to me is a bland tipple and I only ever have it on scorching hot days and then only 1 or 2 pints of the stuff before I feel gassed up.

Which do you prefer and why? What is your favourite and why etc?

I agree with you and love a decent pint of the local brew. The chemical lagers are just full of crap and gas you up however after a hot round a "Gunners" is the best refreshing drink Ive had but then its back on the ale or even a Guinness ;)

Real ale for 9 months of the year but you can't beat in ice cold cider or bottled premium lager in the sun

I'm fortunate to live only 4 miles from the Big Lamp Brewery who do some excellent ales including Keelman Brown. A thick Brown Ale which I could say is possibly better than Newcastle Brown, and from a Geordie that is saying something.

I'm not into fruity ales or beers, or stout. Tastes like road tar (I'd imagine)

I vote both!
I love ales, particularly Hobgoblin and Trooper, the Iron Maiden beer. Also like a nice cold lager on a hot day, but a premium one thoug,h, none of this weak aussie rubbish.

Bitter is better.
I don't know why, but i get a murderous head of lager,( must be the gas .)
Also the decent stuff with a bit of flavour is way too strong for me.
With real ale you can usually find a lovely pint with an abv below 4.0%. This means i can have a good night out and not end up slobbering over everyone telling them how much i love them. :o

Generally an Aleman but quite partial to a strong lager - has to be a decent strength or it really does taste like it's been "passed by the Management"
I don't get out on the lash these days as it takes a bit longer to get over it. Ales I used to partake included Flower's Original, Brakspears Special, Owd Roger and Hobgoblin but the one I always go back to is Ruddles County, 3-4 pints of which cures virtually all known ills....

Was it Archers [not Arkells] who used to do a Summer ale 3.4% in Wiltshire.
That was a lovely beer.

Just checked.
Closed 2007.

Visiting Ruddles country next week, my wife is researching some pubs previously owned by an old relative.
That was quite a result I can tell you!!

I had a few pints of bitter with the GM boys and those of us staying at the Black Horse for the Ping ProAm and to be honest I doubt I shall drink that much in the next 6 months. An odd glass of port will do!

When we are out then it's real ale, especially as I am spoiled living near some of the best micro breweries in the country, but at home it's a cold lager from the fridge as real ale just isn't the same from a can or bottle.
I'm not sure if Sharps is technically a micro brewery anymore as it's got so much bigger in reputation but it's still brewed on the same site 100 yards from the boat builders I used to work at.

Horses for courses for me.

Bitter/Ale in the evening. Lager after Golf (Amstel is far too nice) or Cricket once I'd realised a warm pint was not what was required after 8 hours in the sun! Speckled Hen, Landlord and Old Hooky are among the favourites.

Local is tied to Greene King and normally selects a good Guest Ale. Half and Half of their IPA and Abbot actually tastes really good!

Local Laithwaites also sells a local (Windsor) Brewery's and their Knight of the Garter is a lovely Golden Ale.
