There are only three things you need to know about lager; It's cold, fizzy and horrible!

As the Wychwood Hobgoblin strapline says "what's a matter lager boy, afraid you may taste something?"

And there lies the argument that taste is subjective. :)
And very much 'environment' dependent!

Many years ago, I played (low) league cricket. After a seriously competitive match (can't remember who won!) in seriously hot weather, we went to the local that served perfect (to/for me) Guinness, so I ordered one! Big mistake! What I needed, and immediately ordered, was an ice cold Fosters!

Tasty, warm beer suits the British evening climate. It needs to be cold back home! Unfortunately, 'cold' as a priority means taste/quality is NOT a priority!

Btw/@Murph. Hobgob is not Whychwood's best beer imo, merely its most popular!

Don't recollect ever having had a Wychwood ale in a pub... Only ever seen it in bottles... Hook Norton, from the same part of the world, brew some decent ales... Highly quaffable...

Speaking of international beers.. somehow (in my mind) some of the Belgian beers are overtaking the German commercial powerhouses. Some of the Hoegaarden variety of wheat seems to be interesting and there seems to be uptake in 'Blonde' beer too. Not seen many local wheat beers.

As an aside, going to Octoberfest at an old mates. He specifically said, get 'German' beers (nothing else allowed). What would you take? (Octoberfest could be a different thread) BTW, are we allowed Octoberfest once we leave the EU?

I'd go for Paulaner, Augustiner, Hacker-Pschorr, Lowenbrau, Spaten - all their official Oktoberfest beers can be purchased in bottles now online at places like BeerHawk and BeersOfEurope
