Hi Guys,
I'm doing a short study as to see if any of your courses/clubs have a Ranger, Starter or a meeter and greeter? (yes all rolled into one)

We have at my club, I feel it is a total waste of money seeing as most clubs are in diffs.
I know council/pay and play course might need this, but thats slightly different from private clubs having to fork out on this.
In your replys could you include your clubs name and if its either private members or council pay and play.

Thanks in addvance of your replys!!!

Morning CC07, Nope , we don't have a starter, course ranger, or anyone that welcomes you onto the first tee. Only the large DeVere / Marriott courses and the more prestegious (sp?) ones in the area do.

I was a committee member at a council run course several years ago.It had its fair share of problems (slow play, trolleys on greens, marking cards whilst groups were waiting to play etc etc).
The council said they couldn't afford to employ "Course Marshalls" so i suggested employing some of our older members as Marshall's on a voluntary basis, and instead of paying a wage, offering them free 7 day membership.
Sadly the council rubbished my suggestions, and the course continues to have problems during the busier months, and is losing members because of this.
I haven't mentioned the club involved, because i'd hate to put anybody off playing there,as in all honesty the course itself,is superb.

I play 4 different private course in Cambs.
2 of them have a marshalls/starters hut near first tee. I only ever seen 1 of them used and check tickets etc.
One of the other courses has marshalls but not at start.
One has no marshalls/starters

Starter and/or meeter and greeter - depends on how busy the courses are likely to be with visitors.

Course marshall.

Private members club (Sundridge Park) with 2 popular courses and time boards on both courses that are effective in evening out the flow of traffic.

We have a Starter on from 7 till 6 during the season. Its a private club and we get a lot of visitors.

Their is talk of getting a Marshall.

We are a council run course,Vivary park gc,and we have 1 ranger at the moment,he is a trustee of the club.
However there are plans to get two more, they are definately needed, especially at the moment with the later nights.

CC07,

Played on an outing this spring organised by the Mizuno forum at Brampton golf club in Cumbria. The Club had someone there to welcome us and to show our organiser where everything was. They also had someone out on the course as we crossed over a road onto the back half of the course.

A very nice touch indeed. They certainly made us welcome that day, even allowing us a mid morning tee time on a busy Saturday.

Good impression and excellent customer service, I'd certainly go back to Brampton after the way they looked after us.

a few I've played at in this area;

1. private, big joining fee and subs, starter/greeter/marshall - nice bloke too
2. crown golf course - starter/marshall - there are more than one, one is a bit full of himself
3. muni - starter, peak times only. oddly its sister muni doesn't have a starter.
4. mine, p&p - starter, peak times only

quite a few, of all types, just seem to use starters at peak times

We normally ensure one of the Directors, Captain or Vice is on hand to meet and greet societies since it was introduced at the first GM meet we had at Ascot and seemed to be quite a good idea. We don't have a starter although I often think we could do with a couple of spotters on our first as it tends to play into the sun particularly in the winter when it's lower in the sky. At 229 yards and with trouble left and right it may stop having to hit provisionals because no one has seen where it's gone

We have a starter for busy times, who marshalls a little bit by telling people to get a wriggle on if they've lost ground when they are on a tee near his hut (7th, 10th) and on rare occasions he'll zip out in his buggy to find out what the problem is if there's a big hold up on the course.

His hut is also the halfway hut and manned by him when it's not too busy or one of the restaurant staff when it is busy.

He also has a microphone connected to an amp hidden in the flowers by the first tee and you get announced onto the tee in the bigger comps. That doesn't add any pressure at all!!!

Private course and has only recently employed a course marshall to oversee that members dont hold up play and keep within the 4hr 15min time limit on competition days.
I feel it is a complete waste of the clubs resources as the committee of the club can tell how long each 4 ball has taken as all scores have to be recorded after coming off the 18th hole.

We have starters who are members that meet and greet societies. The two ladies that started the Forum Meet were very pleasent and I think it is a nice touch. We have a few internal out of bounds, which for a first time player are nice to know in advance. ;)

I'm at a members club which then allows non-members out after 12pm at weekends, and we've a couple of marshalls who go out throughout the day, including comps.

One of them tends not do say very much to people playing slowly or understand the concept of who's holding play up. The other guy is brilliant.

No starter or meeter/greeter.

We have nothing, no starter, no marshalls, no tee times, just pitch up and play. It is a private club and only member guests allowed on at weekends.
