OK I agree - we place rakes pointing towards the flag and not near either side edge of a bunker (if we take the front edge of the bunker as being green-side. A rake at an edge of a bunker is a complete pain - can stop the ball clearing away from an edge if you go in, and stops you getting a bit of luck in hitting an edge - bouncing out the bunker or kicking back off it and clear of the edge. So yes - middle of bunker.

in the good old days when we had no rakes at hand , it was quite a skill and work of art ! performed by us old farts to get the sand nice and smooth and level , for the next poor soul who entered . using only our old spikey shoes and fancy footwork . SAND DANCERS try it sometime
How about not having any rakes at all.

Bunkers would be a proper hazard and this question would be answered...

Hmmm, creating a nice crater where the rake dug into the sand ... I can here the moans of approval from the guy stuck in one of them now ;)

A creater???

Not at all it 's sand, the thing does not move on landing!!

not sure what sort of bunker you have at your place that dropping a rake 3 or 4 feet away would create a"Creater"?
