Rakes in or out?

My club has moved to have rakes left out of bunkers now.

What do your clubs do, and what do you think is best?

Do you have rake stands so they are elevated and therefore don't stop ball from going in the bunkers?

On Saturday I was out of position and decided my best bet was to run the ball into the greenside bunker. Unfortunately the rake had been left just in front of the bunker and my ball stopped a couple of inches short of the bunker on a nasty downslope, with very little room to stop the ball on the other side.
If the rake was left in the bunker the ball may have hit the rake, but stopped in the middle of the bunker.

Interested on other folks thoughts on the subject?

I always put the rake back in the middle of the bunker, that way, if it does stop the ball, it'll stop it in the middle of the bunker.

End of handle out of bunker, rake-head in the sand

Very slim chance of a ball being prevented from falling in and players don't have to traipse into the centre just to get the rake and having extra footprints to rake that're nowhere near the ball

POPCORN.....get your popcorn here....only £1 a bucket :D

ours are supposed to be left in the middle of the bunker handle facing towards the back edge. The club have even put a sticker on every rake, giving these instructions. I can only surmise that most of our members or visitors can't read, judging by where most of them are left.

My son was playing a junior comp on Sunday and topped his second towards the bunker and a rake was lying long way's and his ball hit and jumped over the bunker on to the green, to say he was happy was an understatement not so sure on his playing partners.

Rake in the bunker

I thought on a previous occasion this was raised that the greenkeepers association stated rakes outside of bunkers. I follow that advice now. There is no rule at my place, never seen one anywhere. The y shaped holder gives it away if a club has a preference but otherwise I leave outside now. Happy to change if someone posts any other official statement regarding them.

Left in the flat part seems a pretty obvious solution to me. That way it won't stop a ball from going into the bunker and once in there it won't cause any unfair lies on the sloping sides.

I'd be happy if you all actually knew what they were for and used them accordingly...

There is no universal correct answer - it is entirely up to the committee of each club. The advice of R&A/USGA is:

"Therefore, after considering all these aspects, it is recommended that rakes should be left outside bunkers in areas where they are least likely to affect the movement of the ball."

I always thought you were supposed to leave them in the bunkers, so they don't potentially stop a ball from rolling into it. So I always leave the rake in the bunker.

In the middle pointing towards the flag. Playing yesterday evening I gave up moving rakes left (dumped) in idiotic positions - just in the bunker lying parallel with the edge; half in half out with the rake 'head' sitting in the bunker a foot from the edge of the bunker; rakes lying out of the bunker lying parallel with the edge of the bunker (stopping a ball from rolling into the bunker). Just frankly unbelievable.

An incredible number of players seem to be stupid, careless or unthinking about those following. In my view it should be the responsibility of every player to correct the position of a rake if they see that it is not in the position directed by the club. Just do it. It's not difficult. It takes no time at all.

But every chance of a ball rolling in and getting trapped by the rake-head against or close to the back edge of the bunker.

Fine for pot bunker but what about full size ones, to prevent footprints you'd need to throw it which will reduce lifespan or levitate. Otherwise there can easily be 5 -10 yards of footprints needing raked when either retrieving or depositing a rake that have nowt to do with your ball position/shot

The best thing is that the R&A go to the length of making a reccomendation that rakes should be left outside bunkers.... but some clubs still insist on ridiculous rules on where to place them.

Leaving them outside is such an obvious thing to do that I cannot understand why any of you think otherwise

Could you justify this statement? I find it more obvious to leave the rake in the bunker, where it can't prevent a ball from entering said bunker. Why would you think the opposite is obvious?

Case by case basis I'd say. None of our bunkers are very wide front to back and so it is easy to throw or drop the rake in the bunker without making a mess. It really isn't difficult.

It's not ridiculous at all. What IS ridiculous is where some rakes are dumped outside of the bunker.

A rake in the middle of a bunker might stop a ball - but it'll stop it in the middle. No issues for us club golfers. Now for pro's I can see that a case could be made that a ball entering a bunker should find it's own end point - and hence no rakes IN bunkers.

But for club golfers having a rake in the middle stopping our ball in the middle should be OK for everyone, as the benefit or drawback will even out over the piece - and will be consistent,
