Rakes in or out?

The main reason for leaving rakes either in the bunker or just the very tip of the handle just outside of the edge of the bunker (our preferred method) is because it saves the greenstaff having to get off the mower to move the rake when mowing round the edge of the bunker.

When you add up the time it adds about half hour to an hour to a greenkeepers work load if they have to move every single rake before mowing.

Same problem though isn't it, just a different person has to move it (the green staff still have to get off the raker if its left in the bunker so no time saved or any less inconvenient)

I've always thought that "in" is better than "out".
If the rake is out of the bunker it could prevent a ball from going into the bunker, it could stop the ball in a very difficult position ( on a down slope for example) or it could deflect a ball into the sand where it wouldn't have gone..
A rake in the bunker could, but much less likely to, deflect a ball out of the bunker.
If it stops a ball in a difficult position in the sand then I don't really have much of an issue with that - it is a hazard after all and you're not supposed to be there...I think many forget that ..if you have to play out sideways or backwards as a result then that's life....

I don't actually care that much where any club requests that I place a bunker rake - as long as I know (or it is immediately obvious) - and everyone adheres to the request - and not simply notionally.
