Played yesterday in winter com.but hade a side bet for three balls opponant hit his bag trying to chip onto green we thought you loose the hole if this happens but wasnt sure were we correct?

Funny thing was his bag was in line of pin and asked me to move it!! having moved it right away to the side of green he shanked it hit his bag bounced off and just missing my head!!

In Matchplay it is loss of hole or 2 stroke penalty and the embarrassment of doing it.

The ruling changed I believe in the 2008 edition.
Rule 19-2 says it is a 1 shot penalty in both strokeplay and matchplay.

not quite

19-2 is one stroke penalty in strokeplay,

19-3 there is no penalty in matchplay but
The player may, before another stroke is made by either side, cancel the stroke and play a ball, without penalty, as nearly as possible at the spot from which the original ball was last played (Rule 20-5) or he may play the ball as it lies.

At the risk of nesting too many quotes !!.....I'm afraid the above is not correct.
The OP clearly said that the ball struck the players own bag so it should be a 1 shot penalty. Rule 19-2 which covers this does not make any distinction between strokeplay and matchplay.
Rule 19-3 covers when the ball hits his opponents bag or his caddy or equipment so isn't relevant in this case.
