Well, the first competition of 2012 has been drawn.

For some time now I've been wondering whether or not to ask why qualifiers have never been played between October and April, but not being one to rock the boat haven't bothered and have just got on with it.

There's no good reason for it that I can tell. Our white tees are taken in during the winter and everything is played from the yellows, but it is still a measured course (6,300+) and has it's own SSS (70 vs par 72). We also play on proper tees and greens all year round so as I said, no good reason to not have qualifiers.

The first one of 2012 is a qualifier. Hooray!

I might not be so happy when I blow up and don't even buffer, but at least we have a chance of a cut now without waiting until April.

Do you have qualifiers in the Winter?

Are you happy that you do or don't have them?

Yep we have qualifiers in the winter. The white tees are taken in and the course measures 5900 with a sss of 69 from the yellows. We have one temp tee on the 14th but the course still measures the full distance. Still get some morons playing from where the whites usually are during general play though.

Almost every time I play it is a qualifier, was out today in pretty heavy rain and around 25mph winds but I think it will be reduction only, but nearly always is a qualifier although far too many stablefords for my liking.

Absolutely, we have a New Years Day trophy on Sunday, then a monthly medal the following week, then a monthly stableford 2 weeks after that. All qualifying comps.

we have qualifying competitions at least every other saturday.

i play on a links so it isn't really affected by soggy coniditions: no temporary greens, always play from the propper tees.

the last one i played in a couple weeks ago, had a CSS of 75 for a par of 71, really tough going, bitterly cold wind, scored 31 points, and ended up winning a prize!

SSS for the course is 73

We have qualifiers in the Winter as our red tees never move! Also, very rare for us to have temp greens. I think that the comps often end up being reductions only though.

Our comps stop at the end of Oct and start again in April. I wish they would play qualifiers all year round. I might have a word with the comps sec tomorrow as I'm sure other members would welcome it as well.

We have comps pretty much running every week that all go through the computer for the Winter League, so can't be too much of a hardship to turn them into comps.

I hardly play in any winter comps for this very reason, not qualifiers.

My main goal in golf is to get my handicap as low as possible, not actually to win comps !! The more opportunities for me to get a cut the better.

Don't know but I did see there were new guidelines posted on the notice board yesterday. We do seem to have a fair few non counting/reduction only.

Sad git that I am I have just checked my CONGU rule book and rule 17.1 says that a club does not have authority to run a competition where handicaps can be reduced but not increased. there are 2 situations where this can happen but I dont think that they would apply and, if they did, it would be after the competition is played. So, technically your club are wrong to run a competition in this manner

1 .. A competition where application of the CSS calculation determines that the competition is reduction only (R/O) -( i guess the point is that the CSS is applied after the comp is played, so it cant be pre determined as reduction only)

2 .. When a competition has been abandoned for a valid reason, reductions of handicap are made on the basis that the CSS is equal to the SSS

I hope that this helps

Chris

Thanks Chris - I think that number 1 explains why some of our Winter comps are "reductions only" when the results are published.

Amen, according to our treasurer our club makes most of its funds from winter comps which are not main board comps, yet have some sort of low value prize:cheers:

Cheers Chris helps a lot always good to learn something new. I wasn't meaning that it was decided before we played but by going on the conditions of the day and by previous experience was how I was saying (hoping) it would be reduction only.

No qualifiers for us till March.

I asked why a few weeks back.
The Answer - Coz we never have, it's always been like this.

Not sure why I bothered.

We have qualifiers all year round unless we have to go to temps through frost etc. We only run stablefords from November-March which I find odd but at least we still get a chance to get cut. Our first one of 2012 is next Sunday so I'm looking for a fast start
