Hi,
Just wondering what people think about the technological advances in putters over the last 20 years have there been any? Is the 20 year old ping in the garage any better worse than the same style taylormade ping now or is all about the feel for you as a individual. With myself i went from a bladed style ping(a cheap imitation) to a 2 ball and now a Scotty square back but have been looking at going back to a blade style putter as they always seem to be what catch my eye in the golf shop was thinking of getting a second had ping/titleist off ebay rather than going for a new one.

There is a lot more technology about in putters nowadays but at the end of the day putting like the rest of the game relies heavily on confidence, trust and knowing how certain this feel.

An old ping still has a place in the bag in my view so long it is in good condition and you have some faith in it.

I don't think too much has changed, once you ignore the monstrosities TM put out.

I'm always drawn to anser style putters, but I now use a Scotty Red X, which will be in my bag forever. This is such a confidence inducing putter. I just can't miss with it, or it feels that way.

I did a bit of carpet putting with my "new" Scotty last night, which is over 10 years old (and looks it!) and it felt every bit as nice as my brand spanking Nike Method #3. Might even take it out on Saturday as a bit of a change up.

Nothing much changed???? Eh!

Ladies and gentlemen of the Forum, I remind you and bring to your attention the

I know the 2 ball putters and the big mallets are new but its the old Ping style putters compared to the newer versions that don't seem to have changed much think a lot of the feel comes from the new softer tacky grips, what putter have u for that u would take 20 for golfstick.

Thats nonsense,

Anser style putters have changed as well, they have inserts in them, some have milled face, they are made of newer materials, research and development has also changed greatly and considerably.

Sweet spots have been investigated and located more in the centre of the putter, loft and lie angles have been investigated and improved upon.

Sighting aids have been improved, such as rifle scope technology, non glare surfaces etc etc.

I was using an old ping anser circa 1975 until recently, and changed to an odyssey number 1. The difference is amazing. The ping is great out of the tiny sweet spot, where as i can miss the centre of the odyssey by an inch and still get a decent roll. The soft insert is great on quick greens, where as the ping lives up to its name, and is more difficult to make a positive stroke with.

I am definitely a believer that new technology has improved the putter, but not necessarily the puttee (?) ;)

If you are only taking the club back a foot, and are then missing the sweet spot on the way through, what the heck do your irons look like?

I take my putter back three feet when putting from 30 yards off the green. :D

What has hitting an iron to do with putting. I don't yip my irons. ;)

Have only had 3 putters since late 80's/90's the first was a 'bullseye' as used by Faldo at the time and currently by Corey Pavin, which I still have but being brass is a little battered, the next was a Ping 'Karsten' Craze, bought by my sons for me and I did not get on at all with but was 'honour bound' to use, as it was a present, but eventually got my current putter which is an Odyssey Tour Black Series 6 which I have to say is the best so far, for weight and balance and suits my stroke.
But if I was forced to re-use my Bullseye I would not have a problem.

Funnily enough I have just gone back to my Ping Anser 2 from 1983 (ish) with the original berylium face. Lovely soft feel even compared to todays models and a classic to look over. I might use the odyssey #9 in the height of summer when our greens are at their quickest as the softer insert helps but other than that the Ping is back in favour
