I'm thinking of changing my putter, (current, Odessy white hot blade),and the more I think about it the more I realise that the putter is probably the most important club in the bag.

So my question is, do you think it's worth taking the custom fit route, and if yes, does anybody know of a fitting centre in the Sussex area?

Its not something I ever thought of exploring. Mainly because until this summer my putting was pretty ordinary and so off the shelf putters seemed to do the trick. I know there are a few on here that think Odyssey in particular lie pretty flat. I don't know of anywhere locally to me or your neck of the woods that offers a specific C/F fitting but would imagine if you wanted to stick with an odyssey you could get it done via Callaway HQ in Chessington

i normally go for of the shelf as long as it feels right and looks good when you stand over it

may be you could ask local pro if you can try a few before you buy

Thanks for that Ethan, had a look at the website, pretty good and informative. Not sure I want to pay £120 for an hours putting, I expect it's very good and think it's more for the better player, single handicap who's struggling with putting. Ok I know mine needs help but think my game doesn't warrant that sort of money being spent on it.

Homer, I'm not against switching from Odessy to something else, maybe I'll have a word with the pro as MattO1 has suggested.

If you want to stick with an odyssey speak to Callaway then. I know there is something like a £40 C/F charge on full sets which obviously comes off the price if you buy and I imagine they'd do something similar on putters.

I dont think there is a point in being custom fitted for a putter unless your 6ft 8 inches tall.

Try a few putters and see which style suits your eye and then maybe go for a lesson.

Oooh, pick me!

I'd never ever have bought a C/F putter...no way...

UNTIL I went to see my pro about having a one-off putting lesson.

I paid £35 for a one hour putting lesson/video analysis and retro-C/F on my existing putter. He took an inch off and knocked it up about 2-3 degrees.

Best thing I ever did, better than any single swing lesson, better than any club ever bought (apart from my spine driver maybe! :)). My pro reckons it's one of the most important things to do with his "pupils" sooner than later. The difference was dramatic and still lasting to this day. The only reason why my putting is statistically only 1 or 2 shots better is that I'm hitting more greens.

When I was missing plenty of greens, I was 1 putting all over the place.

DO IT.....you won't be disappointed. :)

Ok RGDave,

Let me tell you where I'm at,
with that information, I'm in,

I'll DO IT!! :D :D :D :D

Golfmmad.

You've made my day!

I'll offer you a money back deal....you get C/F and if you don't like the result, I'll put you down for £35 + interest in my will.

Hi,
I got custom fit for my putter and it has improved my putting the fitting was free from Daly Golf, the reason most putter off the shelf look ok no matter what size u are is because they are designed with a couver sole so when u look down on it they look like they are sitting flat on the ground but it u take a look from the front usually the toe or heel will be sticking up with the different styles of putting a putter should be the most individual club to all golfers but it the one bought most often without a custom fit.

your pro should be able to do it.

when I got mine, I tried out several. the pro checked to see that the balance was right for the stroke, (if I remember correctly face balanced suits straight back and through better) and checked the length and trimmed to suit.

no charge

I personaly think it`s a good idea. You get your wood`s and iron`s fitted so why not your putter. A lot of people just get one off the shelf at 33" or 34", hole a few putts with it on the putting green and go and buy it.
Over the years i`ve had 2 putter`s. The first one i bent and cut it about until i was happy and comfortable putting with it. Whan i got my Ping i had it cut down and leaded to the original weight.
The lenth of my putter sharft is now 28".

Hi bobmac, I would happily do that but don't know how to!
When I can pin my son in law down to help me, I'll get it posted.

Thanks.

And thanks to all replies, it certainly helps and interesting to hear your opinions.

I'm 6ft 1 and have had a custom fitting for a putter. I've gone from an, off the shelf, 35in to 33in with a head more suited to my putting stroke and the lie to match.

I now putt with straight arms in a pendulum and the ball under my left eye. I'm still not a a brilliant putter (largely because I can't read a putt) but I'm a damn sight better than with my old Ping.

I'd suggest that since putting is what we all do most we should ensure our swing and equipment are correct.
