Provisional Ball useage

Interesting, thanks, i didn't realise playing the provisional ball as you describe is one way to declare it lost. So your playing partners could be desperately trying to find your ball in dense rough, quickly play the provisional ball (nearer the hole than 1st ball) before the 1st ball is found.

There are no ways to declare it lost.

The ball is deemed lost under the rules by various actions or lack of action.

See the definition of Lost Ball.

The problem is that it is the action that counts but by calling it "declaring the ball lost" you make it sound as if it were the words that had the power. There is a long history of players misleadingly believing that by using the words you can make your ball lost

Ok, sounds like splitting hairs over one word, where the actions are the same.
But it is a very important distinction.
Many people still believe that if they simply make a declaration that their ball is lost, then it is lost. They will argue that it doesn't matter if an opponent then finds it before any of the definition's conditions are met. They will insist the ball is lost.

Ok, so in my example (provisional ball nearer hole than original ball) i need to play it before original is found. I assume there is no rule about me asking playing partner etc to stop looking?

In match play, your opponent has every right to look for your ball as it may help him/her gain an advantage if they find it in deep rubbish.
In stroke play however, if you were to say ''nah, forget it guys, thats lost'' then in the real world, your fellow competitors would most likely just walk on.
You may think its splitting hairs and your probably right but it's best to know what the rule actually says just in case.
