Front 9. Fairways Hit 71.4% GIR 66.7% but 19 Putts.
Back 9 Fairways Hit 33.3% GIR 11.1% 19 Putts.

I think I'm going to be spending a lot of time with my Wedges and Putter when the weather allows over the next few months then....

Definitely looks like chipping and putting needs attention first, but difficult going on stats for only 1 round. That's the beauty of SS2. The more rounds you input, the better the accuracy of the info available.

ademac,

I knew you were only joking and it was only mock indignance on my behalf. Sadly those days are long gone but I love to see the youngsters either on here or at my club doing exactly the same things my mates and I did all those years ago.

We would have 50p to the winner putting and chipping contests and on the course we were allowed three nominations where we could choose the type of shot the other members of the 4 ball had to play or the club they had to use. That got the shot making skills working trying to hit a high cut off rock hard winter/summer fairways or finding a way to play an 8 iron from 160 yards

I have to disagree about not practicing. I think it is up to the individual. Personally I love to practice (as many on here already know) and although it may have had a detriment last year it was becasue I wasn't focussed on what needed work. I'm back with my old coach and we have will be sorting out practice drills etc. However if you just enjoy playing the game and taking whatever score comes along thats great. I have no problem with that. I'm a man on a mission this year as I want to get as low as I can and feel I have a few competition wins inside me.

Thanks for taking it as it was intended! ;)
I love practising also and am on a bit of a golfing mission this year myself, albeit slightly different!
I think whatever your H/C , good practice and hard work and you will reduce your H/C!
Even Tiger Woods still has a coach!

My mission is (possibly a different thread) to play the golf that I'm capable of. There is a certain course that I have played 4 times, my best round is 91,my best eclectic round is 84. It shows me what I'm capable of but doing it is another matter I suppose! I'm working hard(4 hours a week on short game, 1 hour in the range). I'm looking forward to my first full year of being a golf addict!

Chris, I play off 11.6 and was as low as 8.4 many moons ago. A lot of folk talk about what works for them (and I'm not going to argue) but for me, the difference between now and then is fairly simple....it's about 4 or 5 shots a round!!!

2 of those are certainly on the putting green/short game. 1 is GIR and that leaves 1 or 2 down to silliness. In the old days, I'd make very few doubles, and if I did, I'd repair the damage with a birdie or two.

I need to improve my consistency in direction by just a small amount, I need to do better with chip n 1-putt chances and I need to become reliable at scoring bogeys at worst when it all goes wrong!!

Consistency comes from trusting what swing you have (once it's usable, which mine isn't really t.b.h.) and then getting some confidence going with regular practice and games. Short game is important, but the difference between always getting down in 3 and turning those chances into 2 is quite a lot of hard work. Around the green, YES, work at this. Pitching close enough from 30-100 yards (short of the green, not flag) , forget it.....I did hours and hours on this for very little benefit (leave this to the pros). Work on your basic chips and sinking those pesky 4-10 footers, and let your long game improve as your swing settles.

I think there is some merit on trying to get as close as possible from <100 yards but I do agree that pros make it look ridiculously easy and for lesser mortals like me the reality is somewhat different. That said I played a lot last year where I would lay up to around 100 yards on a long par 4 or par 5 and then tug the wedge left into a trap so it is something I do need to work on. I think if I can hit full wedge shots with my 52 and 56 and get them 15 yards or closer my new putter and the improvements I am making to my stroke may see me make some of these.

I agree though it is those shots from the edge of the green (over bunkers is my nightmare) that really help transform a score. My course management is pretty good so it is normally a lost ball off the tee that costs the double bogey rather than frittered shots closer in.

realgolfer: I think I'm similar, I can hit a good long ball, but sometimes slightly wayward off the tee, so that needs some work to get me in position more reliably for the second shot.
My iron play is probably my strongest feature, both in length and trajectory, but inevitably some do go astray etc, and I think its where they do, that getting Up & Down needs some work.

I'm thinking I should enlist the help of a good short game coach and start things off on the right track, and after that, its just hours I guess.

:)

Homer: Interestingly, over Bunkers is one of my favourite shots, altho I'd rather be on the green obviously !

Have you a 60degree ? I just love setting up with the ball toward the front of my stance, and sliding the club underneath, - nothing better than a floated shot that lands softly, hopefully near the pin :)

Mind you, off a tightish fairway in dry conditions, it takes a bit more nerve and concentration ! When it comes off tho, its a great shot.

No got rid of the 60 to carry the 52 as I tend to use it more often and the 60 was costing more shots than it was saving. I think it is down to my poor technique and lack of practice. I prefer to open the 56 up to play a floating lob. I agree there is nothing like seeing it shoot past your nose and land softly next to the cup

Chris, you've got to think of how much time you can realistically devote to your goal. If you can fit in good practice on a regular basis then you can devote your time to all facets of your game.

If, like me (and probably most golfers), time is precious then I would say to devote all your time to 100yds and in. Break that down further and say approx 70% of work from 30yds and in. If you can turn 3 shots into 2 more regularly then you can adjust your goal to strive for single figures.

I love practice, its where you build your confidence from I think, Mrs Parmo came up yesterday and started practicing after a wonderful lady member gave her an old set for her to learn ;) more time at the course...

Practice helps but playing regularly is the best method for me.....

Putting is the key but the more greens you hit, generally the number of putts goes up unless your suddenly getting cut to scratch....

Making sure if you do 'miss' you miss in the right place so that you have a solid chance of an up and down rather than staring a double in the face if you miss on the short side or in a deep bunker.....
