Scenario.

Played in an invitation team open day as part of a visiting team of 3. Each team of 3 was hosted by a home club member.

The home club member's score was not taken into account for the team prizes but was in competition against all other host members.

The visiting teams' prizes were based on the best 2 points scores out of the 3, per hole.

All well and good as I assume that the host is a fellow competitor and not a playing partner as were the 3 of us.

Now. In addition to the team prizes, there were also individual prizes for the best individual points scores which, in my book, made my playing partners fellow competitors.

So. What were they? FC or PP?

Not that it actually made any difference in the game but, what if my ball had hit one of the other 3 players or their equipment ..........?

I would see the individual prizes as being incidental to the main event which you describe as a team competition. That makes the three of you in the team partners (not playing partners which is a term much used to mean fellow competitors but not recognised in the rules). Any penalties (e.g. for moving a partner's ball, hitting a partner or his equipment) or privileges (e.g. being allowed to ask for or give advice) would apply.

The host player is not part of the team or in the competition and so is not a fellow competitor. He is just an outside agency but you can't ask him for advice.

A "partner" is a player associated with another player on the same side.

A "
competitor" is a player in a stroke-play competition. A "fellow-competitor" is any person with whom the competitor plays.

In stroke play, an outside agency is any agency other than the competitor's side, any caddie of the side, any ball played by the side at the hole being played or any equipment of the side.

[FONT=Arial, Helvetica Neue, Helvetica, sans-serif]Note 1: The is no mention of a playing partner in the rules. But it is a term commonly, wrongly and confusingly use to refer to a fellow competitor.
Note 2: According to the definition above, a fellow competitor is also an outside agency but there are a couple of rules which distinguish between them.

Thanks guys - apologies for my poor terminology.

My main concern was regarding penalties for hitting a partner or his equipment etc.

These events are usually "fun" matches where your host does his/her best to guide you around what may be to you an unfamiliar course. Interesting that probably every player broke the rules by seeking guidance from their host.

Remember the difference between advice and information about the course. For example, there's a difference between "What's the direction to the pin" (ok) and "What's the best line in to the green"`(not ok).
