Potential New Driving Laws

Another aspect thats being overlooked, with the increase of EV vehicles someone being able to hear a vehicle coming is reducing so having sharp eyesight for the drivers, and also pedestrians, is going to be even more important.
Guy next door to me when reversing out of his drive sounds like a space craft landing.

Only heard one on TV obvs 😂

I’d think the age the gov deems ‘retirement’ would be a good start point (67?) for a mandated drivers eye test (& it’d be free)
Maybe drivers under that age should be able to submit & pass a voluntary eye test (paid) as part of setting up/renewing their insurance policy and get a suitable discount on the policy
Yes have to start somewhere.
People who wear glasses contacts have regular check ups.
It’s the ones who don’t have them but should as they need glasses are the problem.
Won’t admit there less than perfect.

I asked the DVLA last week to revoke my dad's license as he has failing eyesight and poor mobility (no way he could perform an emergency stop) and he refuses to see it.

DVLA response was, only the license holder can request it (other than police following an incident). Oh great then, we need to wait until he does something stupid then.

I took his keys and told him he must have lost them but he just got another set from VW.

Where I live, Southport, two elderly friends were mown down by a guy whose sight was that bad he couldn't see beyond his dashboard, according to his trial.
He'd been warned by his GP not to drive but unlike a stroke or epilepsy his GP couldn't inform the DVLA of his lack of fitness to drive. He selfishly continued to drive.
The families of the two ladies are campaigning to make it compulsory for GP's to report poor eyesight to the DVLA

That was one of the cases which gave rise to the current proposed change.

Could his doctor report him ?

Just seen Red Devils post .
That’s shocking a doctor can’t report a driver for bad eyesight.

Always surprised me that the law seems very lenient in this sort of scenario.

You need an MOT on your car but the driver can be falling apart .
Let’s hope something’s done !
Again, this is something that is not just applicable to the older generation. Seen loads of younger people trying to drive with various limbs in plaster, trying to change gear with the wrong hand whilst steering with a knee or elbow. In fact, the way some on here want to rush back to playing golf after operations, etc. it wouldn't surprise me if some on here have driven with injuries when they weren't fully in control of their car.

Totally agree it should start the day you pass your test.

Safety should be the number one priority for everyone!

But you can do what you want now ! Havnt seen a police car for months.
Only speed camera ones ,

Plenty of cops about, but sadly they have been reactive for years. The proactive stops of vehicles are largely confined to specialist roads policing units, and they are barely staffed.

We have at least half a dozen unmarked patrols around here..
In the last year I've seen a Merc G, a Qashqai, a couple of BMWs, a Peugeot 5008 and even a VW Caddy van....all having pulled people over with lights flashing etc...
I don't know if they're based here or flit all around the Thames Valley area but I see them regularly

One road law id love to see change is the speed limit on country lanes! People think the limit is more of a target that they need to get to rather than driving to the road and conditions.

4 x today nearly got driven into round blind bends where people of all ages are hammering round them just assuming nothing could possibly be coming the other way. Where I live in Odiham lots of single two way lanes to cut about to different parts and all of them are death traps due to people assuming 60mph is safe because the sign says National speed limit instead of being aware of their surroundings. Of course it’s always the fault of the person driving properly not the prat’s doing unsafe speeds.
