Potential New Driving Laws

When you think of the safety features in modern cars now the weakest link is the driver.

Having an eye test should be mandatory 2 yearly from the date you pass your test .

Regardless of age as there are plenty of young people wearing glasses.
So age is immaterial imo.
This is just getting ridiculous now , eye test from 17 every 2 years 🤣

I can't get my head around the age of 70 being used a determining factor in ensuring your eyesight is of an acceptable standard to be able to safely drive....
My eyesight started going I my late teens..I haven't been able to read a number plate without glasses for 40 years...what has a specific age have to do with it?
Eyesight , mostly, deteriorates slowly.
Many people out there will have eyesight that only just meets the standard but won't realise because they don't get checked regularly enough..
There will be many that would fail the eyesight test but still drive because they think they're OK.....
A minor inconvenience every 5 years and people are losing their minds........well, I just hope they're not on the receiving end of a semi blind driver (of any age) who doesn't see them and crashes into them...
J just don't get it....

Interesting what a bit of Googling can reveal.

The lens starts to stiffen from 40 and, apart from age related cataracts, the eye stabilises from around 70.

If the eye experts say things change from 40, I’m inclined to think mandatory eye tests should start from 40.

Think I would look at 40 which is when most opticians believe the eye sight starts to get worse and every 5 years from then

I’m going to be quite forthright, here.

Road safety is a serious subject. There will be members or casual viewers who visit these pages who have either been injured in collisions themselves, or worse still know someone else who has been very seriously injured or possibly worse as a consequence of either their own actions on the road, or the actions of others.

Drivers who continue to grimly hold onto their licences when their eyesight no longer meets the minimum legal requirement are a danger to everyone. And they can quite conceivably fail to meet that standard from a very early age. With the onus being on them to declare it to DVLA. Nobody else.

Whilst I don’t expect everyone to applaud strategies intended to improve road safety (although, frankly, I’m at a bit of a loss as to why that would be), neither do I expect to see suggestions laughed at.

I spent a working life dealing with death on the road, and the misery and distress that brings. To see your liberal use of laughing and shoulder shrugs in response to suggestions which may help alleviate the suffering of others is distasteful in the extreme.

Yes and I'm going to be forthright and say mandatory eye tests from 17 is ridiculous, absolutely ridiculous. Are we at a stage where the only opinions allowed are ones you agree with? That certainly seems to be the case, If you don't like emojis then don't allow there use.
At no point have I made light of road safety, so please refrain suggesting this, I find it distasteful.

So if you were involved in a car crash and the other driver who was 40 was at fault because his eyesight was poor you would have no issue with that

If it helps just one person be safer on the road and reduce any risk of accident then what’s the issue

Is it just because people don’t like being told what to do ?

“Whilst I don’t expect everyone to applaud strategies intended to improve road safety”.

I only want opinions which I agree with? Really? The above looks unambiguous enough.

You have a relaxed stance towards road safety. I get it. And I respect your right to that opinion. But kindly don’t laugh at the views and suggestions of others when it comes to such a serious subject.

Id probably have issue with being involved in a crash regardless of the reason.
I don't understand the being told what to do bit. I'm a law abiding citizen, if it became law I'd comply.
It doesn't stop me having an opinion on it, be that negative or positive. I'm all for some form of fit to drive test as we get older, just don't see the benefit of a 5 yearly eye test from 50. If you have some kind of serious issue then 5 years is too long and will miss your intended target. Otherwise it's not really until your 60s that presbyopia is likely to be a problem.

Maybe some under 70s folks don't like the idea of discovering that their eyesight, unaided, isn't of a standard required to be driving safely - and that glasses or contact lenses are required. What's the big deal. Lots of folk only need to wear glasses for reading...maybe a good number only need to wear glasses for driving. I can think of only one word that might help explain any reluctance in some - vanity...

Another aspect thats being overlooked, with the increase of EV vehicles someone being able to hear a vehicle coming is reducing so having sharp eyesight for the drivers, and also pedestrians, is going to be even more important.
Mine makes a noise at lows speeds, been law since 2021 I think. Once they speed up , it's tyre noise like any car

I’d think the age the gov deems ‘retirement’ would be a good start point (67?) for a mandated drivers eye test (& it’d be free)
Maybe drivers under that age should be able to submit & pass a voluntary eye test (paid) as part of setting up/renewing their insurance policy and get a suitable discount on the policy

If regular eye tests for all drivers over the age of say 40 reduces accidents and saves just one life is that not a benefit ?
