Fascinating things

Came out of our local Lidl on Monday, and saw a weird glow in the sky. For a second, I thought it might have been the Northern Lights, then realised it was cloudy and there was no media suggestion that there’d be an occurrence.
Got my phone out to get a video and then noticed the lights were moving, and, at the end of the clip you’ll see a column of light shining up from the ground, like a searchlight, but this was getting further away…

Turns out, it was this train, our local line isn’t electrified but it’s going to be, so I’m guessing they were surveying for trees etc, prior to installation of the overhead electrification system.

1958 Lituya Bay earthquake and megatsunami

Once saw a programme about this, it was fantastic. There’s a bit I am not sure about but there’s a bit towards the end where it mentions one of the Canary Islands is unstable. And if that collapsed it could wipe out the east coast of America 😳

Tenerife - the northwest side of Mt Teide. Allegedly.

Collapse is geologically possible - but pretty much most of the theory is conjecture.

I stayed on the Big Island of Hawaii in the late 90’s. The Kilauea volcano had started erupting in 1983 and has done so pretty much continuously ever since. I have stood right next to slowly flowing lava many times and seen the devastation that has been caused. Absolutely fascinating.

This is a decent watch

Seeing this thread prompted me to look up how many earthquakes we’ve had in Andalucia this week. A few more than usual… 26… the strongest was 2.4 on the Richter Scale.

We usually get at least one a day, but only feel maybe one a month.

For the first time scientists researching the brain of a fly have identified the position, shape and connections of every single one of its 130,000 cells and 50 million connections. In order to do this they cut the flies brain into 7,000 separate slices "using a microscopic cheese grater".

The research has shed light on why its so damned difficult for us humans to swat a fly!!!

More insect related fascinating stuff. Restricting the spread of Dengue fever by preventing mosquitos from having sex....

Cool, if used appropriately
Dengue fever is ever present here and the (low) numbers needing treatment usually reported on in the media etc

Its cool watching the bats hunt the mossies down around the street lights & the ever present geckos eat tons of them too

A couple of eruptions in the news recently....
