Portsmouth FC

I have to disagree, and thats not just down to local rivalry. None of their so called fantastic support were in the slightest bit worried when they were clearly spending way way over their budget (courtesy of Mr Redknapp). the alarm bells didn't start ringing when they were taken over by the son of a convicted arms dealer, but it was OK as he passed the so called Fit and Proper Persons Test. They were all quite happy to buy an FA Cup with players they could never hope to afford to pay. They were all more than happy when their team of global unpaid superstars beat our league 1 team. They didn't even seem that worried when they managed to attract the only skint Arab in the world. Sadly several small businesses have been put under due to the club not paying what they were owed, they even used money set aside for a charity to pay someones wages. People who worked at the club went unpaid for weeks before finally losing their jobs, on the back of false promises. They owe the taxman millions, any other business would have been wound up, three times, but for some reason they are immune.
And yet still if you read their message boards, or talk to their supporters, they still don't get it. They bleat on about how they are a big club and shouldn't be in this position, how they should sign so and so, who in reality would never even contemplate going to league 2, and they couldn't hope to afford (groundhog day?) . In my opinion they are getting exactly what they deserve, and as much as I would love another derby and the chance to humiliate them this slow painful demise I think is karma at its best.

Exactly, the fact that when Pool bought Johnson from them they got a discount as owed funds for crouchy sums it up. I still remember how they trashed their OWN town after beating us too! Not the brightest lot!

As i Saints fan and past season ticket holder, and work in SKATE land, i am loving it , thier fans are so quiet now. :)
I have an office with a massive saints flag up, but it hasnt all been plane sailing as when we were in trouble they were always on my back , so what goes around comes around , and to be honest Saints have come out the better for it !.
As for Pompey i fear the worst, right to get rid of the manager , as someone new with 7 games left might save them.
Do i want them out of the league errr yes and no ! , yes as i am a saints fan and no because where would the rivalry go.
All they seem to bleat on about is that they own there club ! YES we dont its owned by a wonderful Lady In Katherina Liebhurr (oh and shes a Billionaire

They ee only own it as it's cheaper the lower you go. Of course I hope you refer to them more a skates than scum (that's us)!

i used to work with a lad who took six months to tell me he was from Pompey. We both live in Kent now, but when he realised I was a saints fan he didn't want the grief. Till a few beers lessened his tongue. I do enjoy Monday morning newspaper clippings.

oPS SORRY changed it to SKATES ! LOL

Much better lol.

I think ink ive only ever been 4 times other than footy. Missus used to like to look round gun wharf but got fed up with me wearing saints gear. Final straw being a kid not long out of nappies calling a name referring to next Tuesday.

I do find it amusing how they consider themselves a big club. I consider us worthy of prem based on size, infrastructure, history and fan base. Not sure what makes them think they're any better than championship that's not to say that any club in prem doesn't belong to be there. But think if all 92 clubs were evaluated they'd be nearer middle than top.

Sounds like a certain Scottish team.....

Come on all football forums are the same. I remember going on the Southampton one after we beat them to win the Championship. I would never judge the support for a club from those on a forum. Half of them don't even go to matches.

I stand by my remark that Pompey have some of the best, most loyal supporters around. Are they supposed to stop going to matches, because they think the Club is over spending, has a dodgy chairman or manager ? I have been going to Reading for 40 years, and have seen a lot of highs and lows, but still would never think of supporting another team. We even nearly merged with Oxford, in the Maxwell days.

Just look at Pompeys average gates for when they are in the lower divisions. Not many plastic fans unlike Southampton.

I tell it how I see it, and have no grudges against other local times, well apart from Aldershot.;)

Southampton in league 1 (2010/11) averaged 22161
Porstmouth in Championship (2010/11) averaged 15751

The following season when we were both in the Championship we averaged 26420 while they had 15016
And just to complete the comparison last season their League 1 average was 12232

They are averaging over 15,000 in the second division, and they are 3rd from bottom. If you don't think that is amazing support, I am not sure what is. Not many plastics there:whistle:;)

Its very good, I'll give them that. But when they realise that they don't actually own the club, any more than you or I own ours, and they realise all they've done is chucked a grand into the bottomless pit normal service will be resumed.
And whats with the plastic comment you keep throwing at me? Surely a plastic is someone who doesn't go to matches and follows whoever suits them at the time? Like the Cornwall branch of Man U 'fans' who are currently trading their shirts in for City ones!:D

Southampton is the bigger city according to wiki, and Southampton have also been more of a top division side over the last 30 odd years, so that's probably reflected in the difference in attendances. I always felt that Pompey were the more vociferous fans though.

I agree that they're a louder bunch than ours, although I think part of this atmosphere people mention is because they've only generally seen Pompey games on TV. Usually against big teams and all fans are noisier in these circumstances. I will hold my hands up and say saints isn't the most hostile place to go. But I don't think being noisy is what makes you good fans as such. Portsmouth have a hardcore fan base of about 8k. No more than any other teams tbf.

Look at the damage they cause to their own town after poor performances, I don't know too many fans that go on a drunken rampage, at home!

A lot of it is down to the ground. We could make The Dell seriously hostile at times. As nice as St marys is its just that, nice. A bit like all modern stadia that just makes it difficult to ramp up the atmosphere.
And heres a pic of there much vaunted away 'support' at Wigan a couple of years ago :D

Being Wigan - are you sure that's not the home end?:whoo:

I think the blame has to start with the FA and their "fit and proper person" test.
4 or 5 owners we've had since Milan left and only one of them has had any money, some have had criminal pasts and yet they STILL pass the test!!
