Hi all,

This month, we want to know how many golf lessons you've had with a PGA Pro this year (or will have had by the end of the year). Have they made a difference? Any gems of advice? Any massive handicap drops as a result? As always, let us know by commenting below.

Many thanks,

Nick

Was going to give it up this year but HID got me 8 lessons for last Christmas. My handicap over the last 4 years had gone from 17 up to 28.

The lessons helped me come down to 21 this year and I think it might have hit 18 if winter hadn't intervened.

Will be having a quick 2 lesson brush up in March and expect 18 at least by this time next year.

Dangerous things golf lessons

Last one I had was end of 2013, how a teacher can take a game you love and turn it into a chore that physically hurts is a mystery!

Not enough. Two lessons at the beginning of the season which worked really well. Come March, too cold now, I will get another as things have slipped. 2016 is the year I finally get to use a rescue club well. Watch my golf transform............hopefully.

Big fat ziltch for me, however did take some things away with me from Gary Smith at the Manchester Golf Show and learned a thing or two from the Lee Westwood clinic at Royal Wimbledon.

Took several tips about posture, alignment and ball position from both that I've since practised and am now using on the course.

One in the chill of February to look at things we changed in autumn 2014, in two lessons over the space of 2 months. While my handicap dropped from 12 to an all-time low of 8.6 in April, before drifting back to 9.5, I know full well that I a far better golfer than I was this time last year. I've played 20 comps since April, so have stayed pretty much in single figures all season and played to 9 and better many times in comps. I fully intend to get short game lessons ahead of next season’s start, as that’s where I'm losing out. My full swing is a very functional and repeatable thing, I couldn't say that a year ago. Lessons work, they just require a good teacher, a receptive student, and a bit of range work and playing through sticking to the changes. It's very easy to fall back into old habits, particularly while playing poorly, so I'd advise anyone who has ever thought of seriously improving to get lessons now or at least in the late winter/early spring, before you get your card in your hand.

Getting better is the way to lower your handicap, sounds obvious but I think I was caught in the thinking that "well I’m off 12, so if I can just shave 3 shots off per round I’ll be a single figures guy". Not how it works. You just have to get better. And doing that on your own, while not impossible, is very difficult for many golfers. There are the self-taught, and a tip of the cap to you, but the advice of a professional is something I wish I had sought earlier. Not that I’m disappointed, it’s great to think I’ll see a little improvement again next year. I’m so stupidly excited about the start of next season I spend my days thinking about new shiny kit. Surely I owe myself new shinies now?!

Of course I do.

I've had none, think I've had 3 in my life. Due to my location there is no local pro so regular lessons aren't an option. We do get a yearly visit from a pro from Inverness golf club who does lessons but I don't see the point in one a year.

I travelled from Germany to England in October to have 4 lessons and a playing lesson with Peter Finch. It was brilliant and has helped me a lot to become more consistent and strike the ball much cleaner, especially with my irons. No improvement in handicap yet, because the season for competitions was pretty much over when I returned, so it won't really show until next spring, I am afraid. I will definitly go back for more lessons next year.

(oh, and if anyone is interested in my little adventure, I vlogged about it)

I have recently had 3 lessons during the Autumn. Its very useful to see what is going wrong and getting the correct information to fix the problems. I have gone from shooting in the high 80's to now occasionally breaking 80 in the space of about 6 weeks from my second lesson.
I had the lessons staggered about 4-5 weeks apart which in my opinion, gives you enough time to work on your swing between lessons, allowing you to make adjustments and practice. Having lessons in short intervals doesnt really seem to make sense as it doesnt give you enough time to gauge improvements and changes.
I will definitely be going for some more in the spring but only a few.

0 officially, but maybe it was a 1/2. A 5 min chat with my lad sorted a problem with my takeaway which was causing me to get a bit cramped.

I've had three lessons in 2015, the first one in March just prior to the competition season starting to pick up any issues I would need to work on and help with the transition back to turf from mats; and two in mid/end-season to correct a couple of faults that had crept into the swing.

Coupled with many hours on the practice range to work on the outcomes, it was very much money well spent in helping shave 6 strokes off my handicap over the season.

Will have a tune-up lesson probably in March again.
