I actually do I only use pro v1 X's, number 2's and only ones that I buy (so that I know how old it is etc) any balls I find I put in a bucket in the pro shop I think he uses them for the junior group sessions.

Your example: You are on the course and find someone's ball, pop it in your bag and it's now your property (unless owner asks for it back and identifies it), anyone who subsequently takes it from you without you losing is it has stolen it. I don't think anyone would argue with that.
Said ProV has been hit onto the range, the range warden "finds" it and pops it in his big collective bag ie the range ball scoop. It is now the property of the range (unless owner asks for it back and identifies it).
Taking it now is petty theft.

Anyone else seem to find more Pro-V1s than anything else?
Is this because they are the most popular ball, or because folk can't control them?
Oh, and i would have blasted the ball as far as i could up the range
I wonder what the ruling would be if you hit the ball into the range from the course and someone threw it back over the fence for you? Would you incur a penalty, or is it game on?

EHHH no ive never complained about the range/range balls. In fact I am mates with the pro and we help each other out so....nope
Thing is your not paying to hire the non - range balls i.e. the pro V1s in question. Also if there was ten there id take 8 and fe*k 2 up the range to see if I can clear the back of it haha

At my course, the Greeno's collect balls as they maintain the course and these end up on the range.
I heard a guy a few months ago say, whilst hitting the range balls, "that's my bloody ball".
TBH the one you took will end up back there again once you've lost it again.
I have no problem with someone taking a normal ball, they almost all belong/ed to someone else.
What I don't like is people taking "Range" balls.
I have found loads on the course in the last couple of years. More often than not, adjacent to a water hazard. I guess they don't want to lose their own balls so use a freebie.
I wouldn't lose any sleep over it if I was you.

I can't beleive how highly strung some people on here are. Are these the same people that have NEVER speeded, used their mobile when driving, etc etc.
If so we have some virtual online modern day saints and I will need to bathe in holy water before entering the forum again. Its one ball. As others have said the club can't prove the OP didn't originally lose it anyway so whats the problem. Linking this to muggings, robbery and breaking and entering is frankly absurd.

During a lesson on the club range, one of my 'lost' balls appeared in the bucket of balls. It was marked, and I asked the pro if I could have it back. It was a Z-URS!
It felt very good to actually get one back for a change!
As to what I find on the course. Rarely is it Pro Vs or any other decent ball. Mainly cheap 'rocks'!

To be fair I can't believe anyone on here has never gone 31 in a 30 zone (illegal) or had the wrong change in a shop or bar and never gone back (illegal). I accept that theft is theft etc but unless you really are walking this planet as a latter day saint I doubt whether you have never broken the law (irrespective of being caught) and so it seems a little pious to say one ball is a big deal (1 mph over the limit is still illegal!!)

I think its very sad that anyone has a need to pocket things that dont belong to them in the first place, I think its sadder that someone needs to pick up a golf ball and pocket it, it obviously has nothing to do with economics, it has to do with a petty culture that says to people, 'Its ok to steal golf balls cos its not really stealing'. It is!
The day I feel the need to enhance my life by picking up golf balls, that may or may not be lost, and popping them in my pocket, will be a very sad one for me Im afraid, I havent had to do it for the last 30 yrs and amazingly Im still not a petty thief. Im sure there will be all sorts of defence following this but it wont change my opinion. The only time I accept balls found or recovered and benefit or money made, is when clubs collect lake balls and use them for the range at no cost to members, or sell them on to make money for the club, again giving something back to members who likely lost them in the first place.

HNJ - I presume you never pick up a ball you find in the rough - EVER and either use it or put it in a practice bag?
