Playing off whites

twire i disagree, the last 4 rounds ive played at the new club have all been off the whites. because ive entered 4 comps on the bounce to get my 3 cards in for a official handicap.

4 rounds of pretty much the same tee box position hasnt changed the course much, im now kinda looking forward to heading back to the yellows for a change, with my next round off the whites not being for a around 3-4 week.

At my old club i used to love the monthly medals just because of the comp tee's.

I have a choice of tee that I can use, whites or yellows when having a knock around. You have no choice, and your better off???

You said it was boring playing off whites all the time. At my club, the whites are out but you don't have to play off them for social rounds......but you do have the option.

Istill cant see how me saying its boring playing off the whites all the time is claiming im better off, but hey hoo.

its definately good that clubs are giving members the option to play more off of the whites tho.

OK I'll try and explain.

You said you prefer your system where whites are only used for comps. I said I have a choice....thinking having a choice was better than no choice at all. Then threw in a sarcastic "and your better off"

There, clear as mud.

;)

We can play whites at my place and I do all the time. I prefer to play the course at its full length. In fact I think I've been off the yellows about 10 times in five years and all of those have been social comps. Societies have to play off the yellows (unless its GM) which has caused a few arguments but its a policy the club wants to stick to and to be fair I applaud it. A lot of our juniors and seniors play off the yellows anyway so midweek the white tees don't get too overused and are moved about regularly. However if you start adding 3-5 societies per week in the height of summer each with 20+ players then they will take a hammering.

ah ha... sarcasm. i must of missed it. :D

I think we have the best of both worlds - whites are only for comps and I like it like that - as said it makes the comps more challenging. Yellows are for general play and visitors - we also have blue tees for members - these are further back than yellows and nearer the whites so you get the benefit of the long course but still reserve whites for comps.

I don't get the arguement that if you have the choice you can use yellows if you don't want to play whites - you'd have to be a bit daft to play yellow when the rest of the club was getting practice on the medal tees! So it's not really a choice is it!

whites are supposed to be comps only but the lower handicappers are allowed them for all games; we lesser mortals are discouraged. on a couple of holes this makes a significant difference, not just a club or two but different lines.

We only play off the whites in competitions. All other play is off the yellows.

I don't have a problem with this, keeps the white tees looking good for competition play rather than having them hacked up by all and sundry when they feel like it.

Always play off the whites as the holes are harder on a lot of the holes so dont want to kid myself on with a good score off the yellows. the only time i use the yellows is when I'm playing with a couple of mates who dont play comps or any guests I play with.
ps - my score is never better by much of the yellows anyway :D

I wouldnt join a club that didnt let me play off the back tees on a daily basis. I pay full membership I want full use of the facilitites.

You can play whatever tees you want at our course if youre a member. Societies are asked to play yellows and the old fellas always play yellows too (its makes them think they can play to their h/c)

Oddsocks - if you find off your whites its only a drive/wedge then I have 2 points for you.

1.It's too short a course , move somewhere with some length
2.Try using shorter clubs off the tee so you can use longer ones into the greens

A very interesting thread and a subject we have discussed doing one of the GM debates in the magazine on

one point I dont think anyone has made yet is the effect on pace of play of allowing everyone to play from the white tees.

In my experience it almost always slows play for two reasons.
1. the course is harder with longer carries so more provisionals being played and balls being hunted for

2. You're often walking 'back' from greens to genuine medal tees

At one of the courses at which I'm a member, comps during the winter are played on the 'winter course' which is from roughly where the yellow tees are soemtimes even forward of that which promotes very fast rounds meaning mnay more prople have the oportunity for a knock during the shorter days
During the proper season category 1 and 2 players play the 'green course' (what would be white tees at most clubs. Category 3 and 4 play the 'yellow course' (yellow tees)
Once a year we play from the Championship Course (Open tees)
which is pretty punchy (CSS was 78 last year)

This seems pretty logoical in terms of ability but a bit odd if one of your is cat1/2 and the other 2/4 (we play comps in pairs)

Whites are only used for Competitions and matches. I think this makes the competition more of a challenge on a Saturday as a few tee boxes are totally in a different place, not just a difference of yardages.

Mike,

surely if it's a comp then all are playing from the same tees. the only issue you have is for 3/4 playing unfamiliar tees as it is for many of us when playing a medal.
there is no maddening adjustment for men playing off different tees as there is for ladies.
