Played some boring golf..

A regular playing mate and I tee-ed off at Chobham GC. I have played Chobham about 5 times but not this year, it was the first time my mate was playing Chobham.

So he had the usual obvious questions... 'What line do I take'. Chobham has a few blind/dog legs. Since I was not really sure, my only advice was 'Stick to the fairway'. I took the same advice and it was remarkable this simple advice turned out to be.

I had a great day too.. 8 pars & 1 birdie!! (probably my best outing) At one point it was turning to be pretty boring.. Tee-fairway-green. Not many deep rough or trees. I dont think I got much value from the green fees. Hence having 4 blobs on the card felt being normal again though it killed the final score.

my final conclusion... Stick to basics, rein in your ego for this high percentage shots and hit a good score!!!

I read a book years ago by Tommy Armour who advocated being your own caddy. In other words, in any situation you find yourself in, ask yourself if you were the caddy what you would advise, then quite simply take your own advice. It sounds really simple, but it's amazing how many times we do the opposite. It sounds like you took your own advice and reaped the benefits.

I was not intending to enjoy this post as I thought it was going to be a moan but I did enjoy the simple message! I like the "be your own caddy" bit too. All my best rounds have been.... I don't want to say it as its not strictly true but... conservative. I think considered would be a better word as I do tend to always go at par 5s for two if the conditions make it possible for me.

Its that old "how many times out to 10 can you make this shot" if its less than 7 out of 10 its probably the wrong shot. The problem is when every shot is less than 7 out of 10 :lol:

I think this is brilliant.. never thought of it that way.. Agree today I did a bit of that - take my own advice.
In real life, if I were to caddy myself, we would end up in a kicking the daylight out of each other..

Chobham is a not a very tough course (par 69).. it has some very good P3, varied P4s, and easier P5 - i birdied the P5. I play there once in a while and it is a good change. The clubhouse has a old world feel to it and is very welcoming. They also accept 2-fore-1 vouchers, so at £25 it makes a great price.

Where do you play? I am in Wok too and usually play Hoebridge, we should catch a game. Looks like now we can have a 4 ball to represent Woking (SyR and Hooker)

Played a Southern Matchplay ko match today, didnt hit more than 3 iron at any point, only dropped 4 shots. Could easily have shot par or better if the greens had been a bit better but can be a much easier game from the short stuff

I am really quite worried what a caddy would tell me to do and whether I would be physically able to!

Not at all - though they can be if you want them to be. Think of them in the order he gives them or both together. You want to play the shot that satisfies both criteria as much as possible.

Yep, there's a reason the greenkeeper mows them out, and it's not for the good of his health.

Is taking a blob common on a friendly game? I make my mates play everything.......I guess its not that friendly!

Some of my best scores have been on days when I wasn't hitting it great but was managing to scrape it around. Fairways, greens, 1 or 2 putts. Boring but good. On those days you tend to know you aren't hitting it perfectly so club up a bit and play conservatively.
