Pitching from the green?

I think its down to local rules, you cant do that at my place, you would get shot. lol. You need to lift and drop.

Point is though that there's nothing in the rules of the game to prevent it. Tbh never seen ut as a local rule either. Assumed they woukdn't think it necessary as no one woukd do it... Surely! Well, until Big Phil does it on telly.

You need to lift of a different green. At my place when playing the 3rd your ball can land on the 14th green. In this instance you would need to lift of but if I was playing the 14th then you can use whatever you like.

i remember mark calcavecchie doing it at one of our opens i think in the 80s.st andews. at the time i said i do not believe it. how dare he. as mr meldrew used to say

Why didn't he lift and drop, you will get people now, taken lumps out of greens up and down the country. I have used a 3 wood before, with a putting stroke. I would never play a full shot off a green.

Wrong green is Rule of Golf - free drop required (25.3),

Putter only on green is a Local Rule at my place - but worded so that if putter is broken, then the substitute may be used. There is 1 green where similar condition to what Phil had is possible - putt from some parts of the green need to go through rough to get directly to a possible pin position as green is kidney shaped with slope in narrow part of kidney.

Seem to remember (Paul Azinger?) chipping from on the (18th) green in a Ryder Cup at Belfry a while back too.

Wouldn't dream of ever playing that shot. A bit like someone trying the extreme bend on pool table. It's going to end in tears unless you've got the skills to pay the bills.

There are a few ridiculous greens complexes on some of the more modern courses resulting in situations where it is isn't possible to putt to the hole. The 2nd hole at the Players Club had a U shaped green where if you ended up on the wrong side, a 3 putt was an achievement. I believe it has now been changed. If designers are going to come up with greens like that then I think it is quite legitimate to chip on the green.

I'm more inclined to the inverse of that! I just missed an eagle 'putt' from 80yds off the 15th green!
so if you had chipped you might have taken out the breaks and hold it. but were talking about people chipping from on the green over fringes and breaks to the pin. imo should not be allowed

Ah right i have watched it again, i thought he was playing from one green to another. Ok i think that is ok, as long as you don't ground your club. I still wouldn't try it, its bad enough taking a divot on a medal tee. LOL

Fairly sure that such a local rule would not be approved by R&A on the basis that any legal club in the bag can be used for any shot.
