Hi all,

i've only just started playing pitch and putt at a local 9-hole course and am hoping eventually to upgrade to proper golf when i master the basics.

So far I've been hitting my first shot directly from the synthetic tee mat rather than with a tee and have kind of got used to doing that. But at the weekend I played with someone who says I should always use a tee (which I tried and boy does it make things easier!:smirk:)

Is there a specific rule in pitch and putt?

Cheers

The only rule for teeing off is as follows:

[h=3]11-1. Teeing[/h]When a player is putting a ball into play from the teeing ground, it must be played from within the teeing ground and from the surface of the ground or from a conforming tee (see Appendix IV) in or on the surface of the ground.

For the purposes of this Rule, the surface of the ground includes an irregularity of surface (whether or not created by the player) and sand or other natural substance (whether or not placed by the player).

If a player makes a stroke at a ball on a non-conforming tee, or at a ball teed in a manner not permitted by this Rule, he is disqualified.

A player may stand outside the teeing ground to play a ball within it.

The important bit is this - it must be played from within the teeing ground and from the surface of the ground or from a conforming tee - so, no rule that says you "must" use a tee. I suspect your advisor was just suggesting it makes things easier.

Ok thanks for the info. Playing without a tee had actually helped me to stay still and disciplined on the shot I reckon but I've lost count the number of times I just brush the mat first and lose traction on the shot!

I currently average about 4 per hole, so am a little off where i need to be. Do you think I need to be doing rounds in 27 and under before I could take on a full course with any hope of having a decent round?!

i think you'd still have fun at a local pay and play, ignore bad shots, if you take too many you can just pick up and walk to the next hole or provided you dont have anyone behind, you re-play a bad shot if you feel you can do better. most still do that now no matter how long we've been playing. it sounds cliche but as long as you're having fun and enjoying it thats all that really matters :)
