Pitch Marks

Playing today, and I was in dismay at the number of unrepaired pitch marks on our new greens.

I can't believe it's ignorance, so it must be laziness or arrogance.

How does your club cope and deal with such problems? To be be honest, it's really starting to get on my man boobs now!

It doesn't, and, it doesn't.

It's a pay and play course so has a lot of visitors, although I daresay members are probably as much to blame.

Very frustrating.

We are not too badly off, but I think that members generally take it upon themselves to repair more than they created to keep on top of it.

I always thought pro V1s were too soft to leave pitch marks.
Not that I check for them after my ball has run through the back of the green.

Same as above really.....I was of the train of thought that it was societies that were the culprits for this
but 2 weeks ago at our course i fixed/repaired at leat 2 or 3 along with my own on some of our greens and that was on a competition day....
We have some right muppets at our club....But i suppose there everywhere

Very frustrating. Our club has small signs by every green reminding us to repair pitchmarks. People obviously can't read.
The greens are so soft at the moment that most pitchmarks are like a crater so you shouldn't really be able to miss one. Without holding up play, we looked for a pitchmark for 2 minutes before we found it- it wasn't a big one but we had to find it.

Since our greens have become quite soft (and with the switch over to winter rules and some mats) over the past two weeks the number of pitchmarks has increased bye about threefold.

I think most are not repairing them as they are not expecting them.

I find myself repairing about 2-3 a green at the moment.

Again I think people tend to repair others for them. I know I do.

The general type at my place are seniors, and no offence to any senior who doesn't do this but mostly they rush around so fast, they know that it's there they just can't be bothered as it takes too much time. You know the get down, whack it run after it types, who forget fourball is a social event.

Personally, I enjoy the chance to repair a pitch mark when I hit the green, it's like celebrating a goal!

I played last Sunday morning,1st off .The course had bee closed the day before for a competition played by members and the place was littered with the things.

Now obviously the pitchmarks were created by members so I fiind that even more worrying than if it were visitors creating and leaving them. It is probably the same folk who moan in April when the greens a bobbly!

For me the worst offenders are certain trolley pushers,I see it,they hit,it lands front of green and rolls up to 20 feet on and walk around the green to level with the ball and procceed to mark the ball and carry on putting without a thought as to whether there is a pitchmark to repair.

Alan your spot on. I wrote out a similar thing about trolley pushers and deleted for fear of offending those who don't do that but most of the folk at our place do exactly what you said.

The guy with the remote trolley sometimes forgets he's actually playing golf!

Played one morning this week and was 4th off. Now the first 2 groups were full of ex-captains and I like to refer to them as the club mafia. They always seem to be making club decisions for their benefit (all old duffers btw). The other group was a 3 ball of over 60's as well.

My partner and I were gobsmacked by the amount of fresh pitchmarks we found during ther round. On one green and not more than 20 feet from the hole we found 6 of the buggers. There was only 11 people playing in front us FFS

Seniors that rush around??? That's blasphemy for certain Forumers If they are too old to bend down and repair pitch marks, how on earth can they rush?

I've often been in the first group out and found many fresh looking pitch marks. Unfortunately our green keeping staff have more pressing things to do 1st thing in the morning than to repair marks and divots made the previous day/afternoon.

I always look for my pitch mark. Sometimes I never find it, but I will find one or two others and do them. This time of the year seems particularly bad. If I'm doing two (even if I don't find mine) and others are doing theirs or more, there must be some lazy folk out there.

I'm quite anal when it comes to pitch marks. It does my tits in that the members can't be arsed to repair theirs. I will do, on average 3 per green. I've even seen playing partners go to their bag around the 5th to get their pitch marker out. Why don't they already have it in their pocket.

A lot of pitch marks at ours are caused by folk who drop 4-5 balls and hit into greens and then just walk off.

A few weeks ago my father in law caught 3 juniors doing the said thing. When approached and told that if they want practice their short irons they should use the practice green, their answer was that the balls don't spin as much on the practice green!!!!!!

I really can't agree with you, I use a trolley and when I get to the green I leave my trolley next to the carry bags that have been left at the side of the green. I then go and repair my pitch mark along with those who carry their bags. Even when I carried I never repaired my pitch mark as I walked on to the green I marked my ball, cleaned it as I walked to put my bag down, then I walked back and repaired my pitch mark. I don't know any carriers who repair their pitch mark with their clubs on their back, as it's to much hassle and almost impossible to do properly. I am sure some do just no one I know.

My view is it is just lazy b******s who don't repair their pitchmarks whether they carry or push their clubs around the course, and no amount of trying to blame one section of golfers will solve the problem. There are just some people who won't repair their pitchmark.

I was always taught to repair your own and one other and the problem will soon be gone, as long as half the players do the same. Work that out for yourself.
