played a course for the first time yesterday which was mostly in good condition until you reached the greens..... i have never even come close to seeing the amount of unrepaired pitch marks on these greens... I had to repair 6 marks on my line of a ten footer on the first hole and they didn't get any better after that, ruined the otherwise nice day out in beautiful weather.

Anyone else had some bad experiences of what is seemingly the result of players who don't care since the club had signs everywhere?

We had it Tuesday at ours, but we had seen three large societies that day two of which were seniors.... Which " around our gaff " seem the biggest offenders

seniors are very unlikely to be making big pitch marks at this time of the year.

they play a vey different game to most. bump and run and run and run.

ill not have the blame put on the poor seniors! ;)

I've gererally found that it's members who cause the most chaos with pitch marks! They are far more likely to be hitting the greens from distance than societies!

Also, the worst greens are where the pin is either front or back! In either case the player doesn't specifically look for their pitch mark, so it gets left. When pin is in middle, pitch mark is likely to be much closer to where player approaches green from - either front or back.

I repaired over 50 that weren't mine the other day - in the evening, so they stood out more than normal, but at least a dozen on 1 green alone!

It's not great at our place sometimes, although not too bad at the moment as the greens are quite firm. Unfortunately, it's a problem with golf everywhere

this is exactly the problem! they don't think they are making causing damage that needs repairing.

the changing conditions have led to a softening of the surface and everything landing on the green is making it's mark - including Seniors! the real give away is that many are at the front of the green when the pins are at the back :)

and (1) I am a senior (2) I make serious pitch marks (3) I repair all pitch marks I can find on every green

It really hacks me off to be honest, I just don't get why people don't repair pitchmarks.

I always make a point of repairing my own and at least one other on every green.

People at Westerham used to blame pitchmarks on visitors and societies, until I pointed out that I had repaired approximately 30 fresh pitchmarks during a stableford... members only!

I suggested we create an "ownership scheme" whereby each green is assigned a surname beginning with a letter or letters from the alphabet, and when you reach your green, you check for pitchmarks while waiting to putt and repair when appropriate.

It does seem to have made a difference, and I've heard people say, "remind me when we get to x green I need to do pitchmarks with you". The rest of the Committee agreed that it's working too.

Something to consider?

oi, if you hit the ball higher than 20 feet you are not a proper senior in my eyes. seniors are oul boys, not just the over 65's!

It seems to be an issue with all golfers and not specific to seniors or societies. At the moment, the scorcio hot weather has firmed the greens and so not as bad as normal

The marks are still there Homer, just not as deep and because they haven't broken the surface they are harder to see.

Last year I played solo following a mixed Senior/Ladies comp.
On our 9th green I repaired......... 33 pitch marks...
That's 33.
On one green....
And I would have fixed more but my back started aching....
Words were said..!

best thing about pitch marks.

you can repair them on your line!

as annoying as pitch marks are, I rarely find them all that annoying. they just spoil the look of the green.
