Ping Putter Fitting - Report

Another fantastic opportunity from GM and Ping.

What an amazing day, hugely impressive the things that get taken into account during the fitting. Turns out my old putter was around 2.5 inches too long and my eyes were no where near over the ball. Hopefully once I have gotten used to it the rewards will start coming.

As usual with GM things, met some great lads on the day. Cheers all, especially my playing partners Mick and James.

Thanks again GM and Ping.

For those that are interested; as I expect some may be fed up hearing about it, a fuller account.

Arrived last, and yet I only had a 25 min journey to FoA, and quickly discovered the Ping Tour van. Bit difficult to miss it really! Coffee and introductions, struggle for me trying to remember actual rather than forum names for the five others plus the three guys from Ping and Paul O'H.

Divided into pairs so two could be fitted on putting green and remaining four given unrestricted tour of the van which, of course, combines a lounge with the most advanced workshop.
It is already carrying fair amount of pros' "orders" in readiness for Wentworth. Interesting to hear the fitters say that generally the more successful and bigger name the pro is the less hassle he tends to be. Also the contracted players are genuinely involved in the developmental testing of clubs.
The stock of components in the workshop is awesome. I thought MadAdey was going to have a "funny moment" when he saw the range of shafts.
Also if you have ever been in the workshop at your Club Pro' trust me, it won't have been like this. The quality, capabilities and range of tools/machinery was mind boggling.

Finally it was my turn to be fitted and what an eye-opener that was. Some of you may have already seen the Ping i-app in use but it was new to me.
Ed' the fitter clipped it to the shaft of my Scotty and before I hit any putts he asked me for a summary of my current putting e.g. how many per round, push/pull, distance control etc; and then the big question. Did I think I was a straight back/straight through putter or was my stroke on a slight arc or a strong arc.
I was genuinely convinced that I was a straight guy (if you get my drift!). Guess what? This fella is strong arc putter and, as such, my faithful Scotty has not been doing me any favours.
The i-app measures tempo & strike as well as the line of the stroke an calculates an effective overall "handicap" figure for your putting. With the Scotty this was 12.9.
I then tried several putters designed to suit the strong arc having first established the optimal length (34") and each that I then tried was then adjusted by Ed to that figure.
Finally it was established that the Shea H was the one for me based not just on making 3 ten footers in a row but also that the i-app now showed the 12.9 figure to have reduced to 4.2. (well I was impressed!).
Lie angle was also checked and here, at least, I was normal so no adjustment necessary.
Final look round the van and handed our putters complete with headcovers before going off to lunch.

After that it was time to put our new toys to the test with 18 holes on The Arden and this is reported on elsewhere but by heck that James (gil_emott) does strike a lovely ball and Rob (rob2) ain't too shabby either. I'm not going to mention my golf, suffice to say that I have had a long session on the range this afternoon.

Truly this was one of those experiences that I will remember for the rest of my days and it is difficult to sufficiently thank Paul O'H & GM together with Ping and their three guys who were such a good advert for their Company.

Thanks again!!

great write up. dont worry about the golf afterwards, I forgot how to swing a club and was on the west at wentworth with a camera crew!!!!!!!!! Not the best place to be the king of fatting a ball.

So how do you chaps rate these new ranges of putters overall?

After the range today it was 45 mins on the putting green and I am now confident that the Ping is in the bag for the foreseeable.

Maybe it's marketing bunkum but the TR technology does seem to promote a better run out on off centre strikes and I should know about them!

I think the grooves do work, they seem to let me get away with missing the centre of the putter face, which I do a lot! I tried lots of both deliberate and accidental miss hits whilst trying it out on the putting green and I was convinced.
Genuinely impressed, I've not really been tempted by any recent ping putters but I think they are on to a winner here.
I love the mid size grip they have too, really nice.

Just following on from MetalMickies write up this is how my fitting went:

I started off by using my own putter and the putting app had my putting handicap at 11.4 with a strong arc. So I was told to go pick a putter that had the red strong arc label on. I automatically chose the carefree as it looked like a 2-ball putter.

After a few putts and some shaft length adjusting my putting handicap was dropping fast and I was getting towards a putting handicap of 5. Paul who was doing fitting decided to get me to have a go with a more traditional blade style of putter and it soon became apparent that it was not going to work.

He asked me to see if there was another putter that caught my eye apart from the carefree. I looked and picked up a Grayhawk model, immediately I was putting better. Only problem was that I was hitting all my putts at the left edge of every hole. Paul then handed me the same putter but set up for a slight arc, unlike the strong arc that the fitting said I should be using.

Well all of a sudden I holed 3 out of 5 from 10 foot. He said he thinks he can improve the role on the ball and maybe get them all to drop in. So we headed into the tour truck and attacked my nice new putter with some medieval torturing tools and started to change the lie angle and offset. Back onto the putting green and out of 10 putts from 10 foot I holed 7 of them......:whoo:

The round on the championship course was great and we decided to play it from the white tees. I managed to go round 12 over with 26 putts including a run of 6 holes that I managed to hole out from between 8 to 12 foot.

Took it out again today to make sure that it was not just a fluke. Today in the cold wind I managed to get round 5 over with 28 putts. So 54 putts over 2 rounds is fantastic for me, as anyone on the forum will tell you.

Thanks again to GM and PING for this fantastic day to remember.
