Golf as we know it today originated in Scotland but there is plenty of evidence to suggest it developed from games played much earlier in China, Persia and Holland.

Where did you get that idea from? I have always believed it started Holland!!

Club and ball sports were relatively common in history around the gentrified areas that had time for lifestyle pursuits, including in the Netherlands.

Golf, as it was played in Scotland was the 1st such pursuit where you actually played to get the ball into a hole. And then of course it was 'standardised' by the rules established by the Honourable Company of Gentlemen Golfers. And of course, when tournament golf started it was dominated by Scottish golfers throughout the 1800's and well into the 1900's.

Golf definitely did not start in the United States.
We're blamed for enough things, but we can't be blamed for that.

Our club opened in 1906, and the game was still relatively new here.
I was not, regardless of rumors, an original member.
