I need (at least) a dozen to cover the several different styles/reasons to include them

Chet Atkins
Tommy Emmanuel
Carlos Santana
Jimmy Page
Mark Knopfler
Chuck Berry
BB King
Jimi Hendrix
Dave Gilmour
Eric Clapton
John Lee Hooker
Hank Marvin

Only 10? Doesn't give us much room.
Given that Hendrix plus the Holy Trinity (Clapton, Beck, Page) are taken as read, that only leaves us with 6.
The task is impossible.

Only by your personal preference in (guitar) style.
Why I needed more than 10 - for the several styles I enjoy!
Marvin wasn't/isn't a truly great quitarist, but what he has done as a reference for other guitarists is phenomenal - Knopfler's inspiration; Emmanuel certainly acknowledges him as such too!

Rory Gallagher
Joe Bonamassa
Eric Clapton
Gary Moore
Buddy Guy
B.B.King
Gary Richrath
Rik Emmett
Dickie Betts
Duane Allman

............. and many more.

Mike Oldfield - God
David Gilmour
Dave Kilminster (plays live with Roger Waters)
Hugh Cornwell (from my fave band The Stranglers)
Baz Warne (current Stranglers guitarist)
John McGeogh (RIP Magazine guitarist)
East Bay Ray (Dead Kennedys)
Bob Mothersbaugh (Devo)
Brian May (extra kudos because he loves animals)
Mark Knofler

Good call on Mike Oldfield. So much more than just Tubular Bells.

My problem is how can you compare Segovia with Pass with Reinhardt with Atkins with King with Knopfler with Marvin (?) etc ....
By choosing the ones you enjoy most.

Jimmy Page may not be technically as good as someone else but he’s the guitarist from my favourite band and therefore is one one of my favourite musicians.

He is a total genius. To any fans of his from the past, check out Return to Ommadawn released a few years ago.
Only saw him twice. Edinburgh Playhouse in 1982 and Edinburgh Castle in early 90s for premier of Tubular Bells II.

Agreed. Despite my love of technical wizards such as Vai and Satriani it was Mike Oldfield who inspired me to take up guitar back in the early 80's. Actually saw him live at Portsmouth Guildhall many years ago. His encore - Portsmouth. Brought the house down.

I like Marvin, simplistic in style but he was a sensation during his era. My favourite duo album was Atkins and Knoffler with their 'neck and neck' Loved it.

By coincidence i was reading his website a couple of weeks ago - he seems to have gone through some tough times of late, but hopefully now in a better state. The album you quote gets rave reviews on Amazon, so think i wil order it.
