Hi guys

Seem to have got a rather nasty trojan on my other PC ths evening, goes by the name Win64/Sirefef.

Having had a quick look on google seems a nastybugger and not easily removed. Anyone able to give me a steer in the right direction as to what to do or is it a case of needing to get an expect to do it?

The machine has Microsoft Security Essentials on it but every time it goes to delete the trojan it crashed the antivirus software and makes the pc restart itself so def cant remove it that way. Tried startig safe mode and had the same problem with it crashing the machine inside a minute.

Try google for Trojan removal download using the name of the specific Trojan then put it on a cd rom from a good comp and put it on your infected one.

I remember doing this some years back but not sure if it's still done this way. Hopefully someone more computer savy can confirm better.

have tried simiar but every time i try to dloadanything it crashes the machine again, guess it needs to be done remotely.

will try and find a local expert tomorrow lol

have you tried booting into safe mode (reboot machine and hammer F8, select boot into safe mode with networking) - try running malware bytes and see what it finds.. normally finds bits.. If it doesnt let you install malware bytes there is a command line bit you can run on the install file which can download, install and update without the trojan cancelling it.

Symantec/Norton used to do a free online scan that would fix some things. Havent used it in a while, but worth a try. MS Security Essential is a bit rookie, you might want to invest in the real thing. It might be cheaper than u think. I think I paid 100 quid for 5 machines license for 3 years. (If you have a home business, you can claim it back on expense)

Google 'symantec online scan'.

Yes, yes.....we've heard it all before.

MSE came out 2nd in a totally independent US university study over 2 years.

I used AVG from 1999-2009, never had a problem.
I now use MSE, that's getting on for 4 years on 3 computers.

Nothing wrong with MSE, just don't expect it to work on a PC already infected with junk, that's where it'll fall down.

Havent been near MSE for ages.. looks like it has moved on from where it was 3-4 years ago.

Security has never been MS's sweetest spot. I was hoping they would buy Norton and fix that gap. Hasnt happened yet.

The other classic mistake people make is to have multiple AVs running on the machine, and virus/malware just slips thru the net..
