Paul Lawrie

I believe the event was organised to address the lack of matchplay on the European Tour. I would suggest Paul Lawrie is also a top player. Marc Warren is also a big attraction to the people of Scotland. John Daly, a double major champion is also a big draw. For a new tournament the level of field is more than acceptable.

A new event, in a packed schedule with many already committed to a WGC event. Some interesting names and a winner take all purse is a novel approach

Totally agree.

Matt Fitzpatrick
Peter Uihlein
Oli Wilson
Bradley Dredge
Andy Johnston
Richie Ramsey
Chris Wood
Thomas Aiken
Thorbjorn Olesen

To name a few. I'd suggest there is plenty of talent on display.

A rare person indeed, in that he seems to be universally liked by all!

loved him in Ryder cups when he used to spank the Americans butts, and u could see them looking at him thinking "who the hell is this guy!!!"

Re the winner takes all approach- not sure the purse but surely if it gets to last 2 they would make some Kind of deal? Even final 4 maybe?

Used to play fair bit of poker back in the day and this was common.

Ur not gonna want to play several rounds and walk with nothing if it's your bread and butter

It's not really a stellar list though is it

Decent players no doubt but a good way down the list of the top players

The WGC being next week hasn't helped

It has the names of any of the good to average European tour events, in its first year that's fine, it will hopefully get bigger, not so long ago the Irish Open was at this level and then McIlroy got the contact book out

Have to post my admiration for Mr Lawrie. The guy works tirelessly for both Scottish Golf and local golf in Aberdeen. The Paul Lawrie Foundation is a credit to him and his vision. This puts funding into every level of Scottish golf from juniors to Challenge Tour players to help them with costs. He sponsors and was instrumental in setting up the Ladies Tartan Tour.

If only other professional golfers put as much back into local golf. I would bet Paul Lawrie does more for golf in Scotland than the SGU!

He now has the Saltire Energy Paul Lawrie Matchplay at Murcar next week on the European Tour. I can't imagine it'll be anything other than a huge success.

The guy is class and a credit to his country puts so much back into jnr golf too

Going to watch this as I've played Murcar a few times as my brother was a member some years back - great track - tough track. I remember standing on tees and him telling me - don't go over there, it looks OK but it's not - it can bounce all over the place. And it did.

Agree with all that Paul Lawrie is a top man. Very funny and passionate about local golf. Out of interest do we know what the top prize is this week ???? If i'd have known it was winner takes all i wouldn't have picked 10 players from this tournament in my fantasy team. Just got to hope my captain wins it now !!!

1 Million

Winner takes all baffles me slightly.

Obviously the field is not full of big names so surely giving everyone some income would have been a better idea.

However it is in its first year so hopefully next year he will get more sponsers and have a bigger purse and have more options.

Anyone watching? Cracking golf in some very tough conditions. Fitzpatrick looks a class player. Bit raw still, and still makes the odd silly mistake, but he's already improved so much since he broke onto the tour as a Pro last year. Has huge potential I think.

Really respect the guy. He'd be guaranteed a place in my dream 4-ball and hopefully some of his iron play would rub off on me.

Paul and Andy who won the comp to play in the Pro Am are archerfield last year said he was superb at the event, sat with them for a bit at their table.

Nice guy, great ambassador for Scottish Holf and the European Tour
