We're lucky enough to have a Par 3 course within our main course- I never used to bother with them that much but lately I've been going a lot and it really focuses your short game- as we all know this is where it really counts-. In this heat it's also nice to just have a 8-SI and putter in the bag.

Last week I lost 5 balls in the 9 holes as the rough is HUGE but it's improved my short game....and it's been great fun.

Anyone else have similar or go to Par 3 courses? it's a nice break from the norm....and quick.

Heres our 8th last night...

We have a small 9 hole par 3 at Aylesbury, its not at all bad, with bunkers and water in play

Probably be the only thing left if HS2 goes ahead

There is also a cracking Par 3 course at Wycombe Heights just off the M40 which I sometimes frequent

We have a 9 hole course, but only 3 of the holes. i nip around sometime if i've only got a hour or so to spare. Its always empty

There's a decent 18 hole one at my old club Hoebridge which I played a couple of times. There's also one at the range I go to but not played it for years. I keep saying I should for the reasons you mention but never get round to it.

Went to the one at the George Washington Hotel yesterday afternoon/evening, not brilliant and the rough on the edge is terrible (also lost about 5 balls) but it's £5 and you can play all day if you wish.
I agree, for your short game it's great, although my iron shots to the stupidly small greens were wayward I was happy with how I was chipping by the end.
We also have an excellent course near Stanley at the Beamish Park Hotel, haven't played there for years but it usually is superb and a decent length course IIRC.

It's good for your short game - longest hole is 97 yards, shortest is 54.
I take a putter and my 2 wedges....
Takes about 20 minutes to go round - excellent when you don't have a lot of time.........
From memory my best is 23....

A couple of the holes, with a bit more length really wouldn't look out of place on a normal size course.
The 7th is 83 yards, 75 of which is over water. Increase that to,say, 120 yards and you have a tough old hole!

ours range from 85yds to 131yds..........nice mix of ranges and some plateau greens, bunkers and streams.

Muckhart doesnt have one but Dunfermline GC does which is very good and I have joined it on a "Wee Course" membership for the exact reasons you outline Colin. Its very good and at the equivalent of 9 quid a month great value.

the par 3 course at my old course in Ireland is a real money maker for the owners. it is rammed when the good weather kicks in. 5er a pop.

decent wee course. holes range from 170 - 90 yards.

I played it countless times in the last two years as I brought my mate from complete novice to breaking 100 on the big course!

really does tighten the short game.

We're having one built at the moment, holes will go up to about 180yds. Should be open sometime this summer. On the plus side our subs don't go up to pay for it, but on the bad side it won't be free to play for members. About £5/£8 (members/non-members) they think it will be.

I'd prefer all under 100 to work on the short game but I guess I could always hit 2 wedges to the longer ones.

Went to a pitch and putt course today with the kids taking along my SW and putter.

A legitimately stern test for the high handicapper like me. Striking the ball lovely- on line every time, but distances were difficult. Very obvious that I rely on the loft of a wedge to do the distance control for me.

It's a part of my game that I will look to practice and master after getting the driver and green-side chips working to a good standard.

We have one down the road at a place called Lavender Park. Has a decent range attached to it. Played it a few times and it isn't as easy as you'd think. The greens aren't fantastic but for me its about hitting the targets

We have probably the best 9 hole course I've ever played, it has a great mix of holes that require the ability to shape the ball both ways.
I usually play it once a week after six when its deserted.

Wow that brings back memories, stayed at the Rosemount Hotel numerous times around 2005 ish, isn't it a retirement home now or something? Damn shame, the food there was sublime.

Have 2 my way...Matfen Hall where it all started for me..loved it there..its short short unlike Beamish Hall Hotel at Stanley more expensive but better....ranges from 85 yards to 185....a great test and I feel its a great help....dont go there as often as I would like.

I have played the one at Dukes Meadows in Barnes and it is realyl enjoyable to be able to practice your short game.
Distances range from around 85 yards to 150 but typically they require a wedge in your hand.
Haven't played there for a while but when I did the greens were always in excellent condition as were the bunkers.

Long queues and slow rounds though, even for a 9 hole par 3!

Has a good driving range attached but that gets very busy in the Summer as well.

The Par 3 course at Gleneagles is pretty special, stunning condition as well, I suppose it should be though.
