Not played cricket for a good few seasons. Combination of kids being young, time and enthusiasm for the game meant I 'retired'.

Went down to nets on Friday night and had a bit of a blast and loved it. Ball was coming out nicely, bit of shape away and the odd one cutting back in. Had a bat and hit it okay. I could get back into this again. Stiff as a schoolboy in a sex shop for the past few days though.

I gave away all my kit back in the day, so I went to a local specialist cricket shop to check out gear and what not.

OH MY GOD. I nearly had heart failure! I wasn't going for top of the range stuff because no one around here is pushing 80mph when they send it down.

Pads £65
Gloves £45
thighpad system £42
Box £5 (yay)
Bat £240 (the one I wanted because it felt great)
Bag £50

Over £400 to get started again.

Anyone selling their old gear? :o

I use to keep wicket and you can add at least £30 for decent inners and another £60-80 for a decent pair of keeper gloves. I use to keep in my batting pads but I guess it'll be another £60 odd for specialist pads

I just took out what was in the team kit bag, apart from shoes and whites. Happy Days  oh yea forgot i had my own box:o

And hopefully your own jockstrap too

Ive still got my stuff not played in almost 8 years now.

one large bag with wheels, all Choice Willow with two custom made bats, 2 sets of batting gloves, Pads, combined thigh pad(inner outer)
Helmet and 2 sets of whites with 2 pairs of shoes (spikes and rubbers)

II had another bag in the garage tha was all Grey Nicolls, who where our prev club sponsor. again 2 of everything. unfortunatly the mice had a field day and eaten all but the two bats .

Well the majority of that was the fancy bat you wanted! Still less than the latest golf gear, mind.

Not sure I'd be happy that the cheapest thing was the box, but hey!

Good game cricket so enjoy!

Is ebay the cricketers friend in the same way as it is for golf? Maybe you can pick up a bargain from someone who has decided to pack it in. This does not apply to a box however. Always buy new there  You should be able to buy a decent bat for £100 still. Beware the £240 bat. The wood is highly compressed so the ball flies off it but they don't last as long. Not like the bats you would have used years ago.

Never been much into cricket, but played at school. As I recall cricket gear has always been pricey.
I remember getting a Duncan fearnley Graeme Hick 405 bat which had a glued on plastic cover on the face, because it was on massive discount at the time. It wasn't much good tbh. Couldn't afford anything full price really. Had own whites, batting gloves and jock and box, all bought on sale.
Used the schools kit bag for helmets and pads, proper knackered old gear it was.
I do remember the race to get to the bats for practice, there were a couple of good ones and then all the others were absolutely dead off the face, made a massive difference.

A couple of those prices seem OK, but £45 for Gloves seems excessive and ThighPad system seems high too! Then there's 'that' bat!

I gave all mine (nice stuff but not totally top of the range) away to the son of a golfing mate who had just got fully committed to it. The SS Bat was a beauty, but still 'only' cost £65 - though it was early '90s!

are you left handed as I have some decent stuff that I will not be using.

Kippax batting pads
Warsop batting gloves
Warsop wheelie bag.
Aero stripper P2 thigh pad system.

there are probably some other bits and bobs in there as well.

as for paying £240 for a bat, you can get a better quality hand made bat from a smaller company for less than that. most of the big name bat makers use machines to make their bats.

when you see the top players using GN, G&M, Addidas etc you need to be aware that the bats are made by other companies as the quality is better and the pros just add their sponsors stickers! Nasser Hussien never used a "true" gray nicholls bat. I recall going to my bat maker about 10 years to pick up some news bats and they had 100's going out blank to the various county players to sticker up with their sponsors logo's.

Not sure what they're like now, but Warsop Stebbing in Essex were making some incredible bats a couple of years back. A lot of the Essex guys use their bats just with other stickers on. I always wanted a set of Remfry thigh guards too, they're so, so awesome, and all the top players use his gear.

I've stopped playing, and have loads of gear in the loft that's not been used for a year, and was barely used at the time. I've got these Adidas gloves, a brand-new pair of Woodworm Premier gloves, Woodworm Premier pads, Woodworm Hard Drive bat (such a good bat), and a load of other stuff, so if you're interested in any of it drop me a PM and I'll let you know what I've got!

Warsop bats are awesome and a decent price. I had a few over the years and never had a bad one. its worth going to their barn to pick out a bat that suits you.

Same sorts of prices I was paying 16 years ago...

I loved my Slazenger V500 bat, so balanced but powerful out the middle. Cost me £200 and I was mainly an off spinner.

Bats are really personal. I picked up a few that were half the price but they just felt wrong. Could you imagine standing on the tee holding your driver and feeling like you cant trust it? oh wait......:)

I like a really light bat 2lbs 7oz approx with 6-8 grain and about 5 grips on it. LEGSIDE WESTSIDE!!

£45 for gloves is reasonable I think.

Sports Direct is cheap enough to get you going again, although I'd avoid buying a bat from them. I use Pro Direct cricket mostly, usually some good deals to be had.

I won't buy a bat online because you have to feel the 'pick up' to know that it's right for you. It can look the part and tuck all the boxes as far as weight and profile go but some bats just don't feel right.

Thigh pad SYSTEM????

You fold your towel over the strap of your box

Bought my last gloves in Bangladesh - great quality

Having said that it's been so long now I reckon the bag of gear in the garage has suffered from the aforementioned mice

Know what you mean about bat feel. I always had a very light bat, including one of those Morrant (hollow) ones (and which Ramprakash was reputed to use with GN then GM stickers on). eventually bought a County from the factory in Gloucester with no stickers on (I hate brands) but which was much heavier (albeit all at the toe) just because it felt right
