Well, I had my corporate day at The Waterfall Course @ Mannings Heath on Thursday and had a thoroughly enjoyable day on a stunning course.

I had an absolute disaster on the front 9 scoring only 12 points but, as the beer started flowing more freely and I decided i'd scored pants, my golf suddenly came alive and I played the back 9 in gross 1 over for 26 points!!!!

To be fair, I cant remember much past the 13th hole as I was a bit drunk, but my scores were verified by our "host" (he was actually driving a buggy full of beer for us) and my scores were correct.

Anyway, back to the point, in the clubhouse afterwards it was apparent that people were struggling to score and I was leading the individual stableford until the final group came in and somebody pipped me with 48 points!!!!

Fair enough I thought, until a lot later I was talking to one of the other guys in his group and learned he had played off a handicap of 18 on the day, yet he played the same corporate day last year and had a handicap of 8!!!

I was robbed of the individual and my team were robbed of the team event as we lost that by 3 points....how gutted did I feel after learning of his proper handicap? :(

The guy is a blatant pot hunter and will have no regard for the way he wins. All he'll see is the pile of (normally cheap and plastic) society trophies and will tel everyone what a good golfer he is. At least Keef still has his integrity.

I agree that corporate days have some very, very good prizes and I guess that in a way it fuels the desire to win one but it seems at almost any cost. I'm not a society member and my official handicap is 12 and I wouldn't dream of playing of anything different just to have a chance of winning.

Corporate days, aaah, dont you just love them?
The thing is these things often have players without official h/c and organisers do little to control the issue for fear of upsetting someone along the way.

Is the guy a bigger cheat than someone in a club tournament who kept their real skill under raps till the big comp comes along, or someone who gets an invite to a corpoprate event where half the field could have 'guess my weight' h/caps, or h/c given to them by a mate or organiser.

I have played in some where more than a dozen players didnt have an official h/c and didnt belong to a club, and where numbers were just picked out of the air for these folks.
The main focus of corporate events is not really the golf in the way its meant to be, no matter how much the lowly workers, higher echelons or propper golfers invited may think.

Get over it I say, business is full of cheats so dont expect anything less at a corporate golf day.

If you want fairness, dont enter corporate events

Dont worry because corporate sh1t sticks longer and smells worse than society sh1t. Make sure nobody forgets what this insect has done so when next years tourney comes round they can tar and feather the coward.

Well just suppose he played in 80 comps lost 0.1 every time and struggled up to 18!

Did you challenge him regarding his handicap?

Whoops I got it wrong Perhaps 100 qualifying comps @0.1. I would write to him or his employer.

Wait to you see him next year; perhaps he will be playing off 28.

Well played anyway. At least you can sleep at night!

Did you challenge him regarding his handicap?

Didnt get the chance to fella, he left as soon as we'd eaten after the presentation, I only found out about an hour or so later when we were all in the bar getting ever more trolleyed!

It really wound me up at the time and I did ask one of the organisers if it was true and he confirmed it, I asked him why he was allowed to play off 18 and I was told they can only put people on whatever handicap they tell them.

Out of interest....the prize for winning the individual was a fitting day with Taylor Made for a new driver, 3W & 5W :(

That is very very true, although out and out cheating like this can backfire as well on the cheater, especially if (unusually admittedly) some of the real big wigs there are 'proper' golfers.

Place where I used to work, our Accounts Manager took out three guys from one of our clients one day, he played with the CEO, against Finance Director and Ops Manager.

Match all square going down 18, FD is out of hole, but first to putt, instead of putting to the hole, he putts behind his partner, and then putts up to the hole to give him the line.

Apparently Monday morning in that office revolved around the higher up staff tryin to persuade the CEO that he couldn't sack the FD becasue of this 'cheating'.

Let's hope the 8/18 handicapper has a similarly akward Monday :D
