just wondering what to do when hitting a drive 220/230 very close to out of bounds but your view is impeded so tramp up to your ball and it is just out of bounds by inches. is it realistic to go all the way back to the tee to shoot again as the rules state especially if the next group are at the tee waiting.i knew the ball wouldn't be lost so i persume i couldn't hit a provisional.

This is the stupidest rule in golf. For the pro, walk back to the tee, for the amateur, drop under a penalty of 2, and get on with it. Walking back is daft.

You can always hit a provisional when ever you want, even if you nail your drive down the middle and just want the practice. Only the player can decide if a lie is unplayable, and how can you know from 250 yards away?

What a great idea.....if you drop it in bounds and effectively play your 4th from there, that's the same as re-loading (walking back) and hitting another poor one, but not o.o.b.

I played a stableford the other day and had two drives just o.o.b. I picked up and blobbed.....couldn't see the point of holding everyone up for 1/10 chance of making a par with my second ball for a 6 nett 5 for 1 point. I did feel I would have liked to have played the holes (just for fun).

If you really want to try 3 off the tee (you have to in medal) fine, it should be allowed, but the 2 strokes penalty would be a marvellous idea for any other format......it could save SO much time at mine on a weekend comp.

I'd say same deal.....if it's lost but not o.o.b. then 2 shots is a bad deal (if you could have found it)...so...decent plan.

It would certainly get me round quicker (at the moment it happens about 2 or 3 times a round) because walking back sets off all the 'gremlins' in my mind and starts the negative thoughts of puting (is it 'puting' or 'putting???)it o.o.b again.

So would we measure the two clublengths with our non-conforming driver and if the ball whan dropped sat down a bit could we use the leather wedge to get a better lie ?

Come on gents, we can't pick and chose how we want to play the game, its got 34 rules and we are supposed to play by those rules at all times. Rule 1-2 doesn't allow for us to make our own version !

If there is even a remote possibility that your ball has ended up in trouble, play a provisional before moving on, be it a tee shot or fairway shot. ;)

(end of rant)

medal Wednesday. long par 4, oob (and river so why the oob?) on the right.

goood tee shot. hybrid 2nd, nearly at the green then bends right, hits in the rough but we all reckon its stopped before a couple of trees. when we get there no sign of the ball - it's found a six inch gap and gone in the river. Walk back 200 yards (yes we have waved the following group through), same shot but this time it bends earlier, walk forward for more balls (extra this time!), then back 200 yards - this time duffed it short left! (maybe the 9 for a 1200 yard par 4 wasn't so bad! )
