A club trophy (board comp) pairs foursomes medal competition takes place where the winning pair are then put through to the Daily Mail Regional Foursomes, it transpires that 1 of the pair is under age to be put forward, he is then replaced with a substitute although he never played in the club competition.

Is that right? or should the 2nd place pair be put through?

We have a qualifier for this and its clearly stated that anyone underage can enter the qualifier but it is the highest finishing team that meet the criteria for the daily mail 4somes that play in it.

I guess if its not clearly defined then someone has to make a judgement call, personally think theyve got it wrong though in your clubs case

I'm guesing it's a local rule for each club, although as it then goes through to a non-club national comp, the Daily mail might have an issue?

Now, the next question is, is it fair?

That's my view also, obviously I felt it might be biased as I was the 2nd pair so was looking for some impartial opinions.

I feel slightly hard done by :(

Id feel more than slightly hard done by mate, but have seen similar decisions in previous clubs sadly, unlucky mate :(

2nd placed pair for me. Had this possibility a while ago, I seem to remember, and got the DM part of the comp amended to be 'highest eligible Pair', rather than Winners. DM doesn't care how a selection is made, just that team eligible, so it's up to the Club really.

Whilst I sympathise with you and it is evidently the clubs fault for not setting out the rules properly in the first place.........I wouldn't want to go through for something like this if I didn't win it.

I was in a similar situation for a unique opportunity as the winner wasn't available, I did turn it down. Fortunately, I won the same competition a year later so was able to go on merit :)

But technically under the rules of the DM we did, as we were the highest eligible scoring pair

You'll have to have a word with the competitions secretary to get clarification on the local rule determining replacement or advancement for the next eligible team.

Maybe the winning team were unsure of the rules and thought they were okay to replace, or maybe someone is turning a blind eye and in both cases there is hope that no one objects.

If it was me in second place and I was sure that my team should go forward I would ask my team for their opinion then if all in favour as a team make the objection/complaint.

If that is the case, then you are hard done by. No mention of it in the OP, so sorry if I have misunderstood

To go forward to the DM you have to be 18+ Nick (DM rules), as such the pair that won our club comp for qualification had a player that couldn't go through as he was too young but the club have allowed a substitute, so technically, although in 2nd place, we were the highest eligible pair!

It just feels slightly wrong that a pair that didn't compete together in the qualifying comp now goes forward.

I have nothing against those players involved, in fact I get on very well with all of them, the club has just handled it badly I feel.

Ok, that is the DM rule not your clubs rules for the qualifier. As I said, it seems like your clubs fault for not setting the rules for the qualifier properly (so it seems anyway)

In my opinion, one of the pair was ineligible for qual to DM foursomes. Therefore, even though it may not be fault of the pair, the fact is the (new) pair has got in by default..By rights, the second place qualifier should have been put through as qualifiers for the DM regionals...If the new pairing go on to do very well,i can see some other competitors taking an interest in this thread.

The club should have made it clear that anyone can play in the local qualifying but only the couple with the lowest score and who meet the later (DM) qualifying criteria can progress to the next stage.

So if one of the lowest score couple had an incorrect h/cap could he be replaced? not fair and certainly I would feel not in the spirit of competition.

Fairest way, imo, is next couple who meet all the criteria are automatic qualifiers.

Could I qualify with a 'bandit' then replace him with a scratch player when it moves onto really difficult courses?
(no disrespect to bandits or scratch players:mmm:)

I don't necessarily disagree with what the club have done. At least one of the winners is playing, so I think that's fair. As others have said tho, it's what the club stipulates so unless they stated as a rule that only the first eligible pair qualify then I think it's fair enough.

Whoa guys!

This isn't a qualifying/next round type competition. They are 2 separate comps, 1 internal to the Club and used to select a pair for the DM external comp.

Daily Mail invites every Club to put forward 1 entry in their Foursomes competition. How the club selects the pair is up to the Club. It seems that Fish's Club also has a Board Foursomes Competition and decided that the winners of that should be the Club's entrant. It's (not also allowing for) the different Rules - if in fact it hasn't been allowed for - between the 2 comps that has caused the issue.

You win some you loose some... Like Chelsea against the mighty Villa boys yesterday

As for the question... You deserve to go to the final but I'm just wondering, how old was the chap who beat the rest of the field? 15? Younger?

Its not a final, its just through to the regional qualifiers, it was pairs foresomes but the lad who's too young to be put forward is just 17 I believe and is off 1 now I think.
