How long would you stick at this game if you were to see no sign of improvement from your 20+ HC ??

Just a thought as we have a few players who as nice as they are look set never to improve if this was any other sport they would have packed up long ago. Then taking it one further step in any other sport how long would your playing partners put up with you ie football,Tennis, snooker, darts ect ???.

What's your honest thoughts when you get drawn with the well know hacker in a club major ??

Oh and im not having a dig at high handicappers we all have to start some where my nephew has recently took up the game and is just starting to brake 110 and when he can do this consistently to around 100 then is maybe the time to think about comps.

A number of different points I know but your thoughts any would be of interest

Why the need to constantly get better. At the end of the day we are all going to hit a brick wall somewhere due to time constraints on practice or simple ability. Yes I love a cut in the handicap as much as the next person but I enjoy playing golf and so would keep going even if I stayed at the same handicap.

I am frustrated at the moment as I know I can play better than my 20 handicap but just could not get under 19 last season then crept up.

Thats fair point.

At some point we all reach our own level of incompetence (or incontinence in some cases). From that point on it matters little if it's HC5 or 20+. It should'nt prevent us trying to improve and hopefully enjoying this daft game.

Depends on why you play the game, relaxtion, love - the fresh air, the craic etc etc.
We all want to get better - well if you are like me and have no natural sporting ability the only other option is knowledge and hard work.
Read about the game and something I wish i had done when i took up the game have lessons -
You dont drive a car on the road without instruction why do people think they can play golf.
if the basics are not there you will never improve - get some basics, practice a bit and you may make it.
In 3 years i have gone from 22.8 to 12 and with a bit of practice and a lot of luck hope to get to 9 this year.

If you want to go low - see your PGA pro :)

I play with a crap 19 handicapper(never breaks his handicap) almost every week and i look forward to a game with him every time. It just depends on if you get on with him etc.

If i get drawn with the 'club hacker' i wont judge because ive been there before and just try and have a laugh with the guy. At the end of the round i might even offer him some help if he wants it ;).

I've been playing this game now for over 10 years and struggle to bring my handicap down. It doesn't bother me too much - just enjoy getting out and playing and accept what happens on the day.

I don't consider myself a hacker though. Apart from the odd wayward drive I often have the same ball at the end of a round. My main problem being the short game where I waste too many shots.

There's always plenty of good banter when playing with the low guys, especially when I get 2 shots on a par 3, I do take some stick though. :)

Enjoy your golf.

Golfmmad.

I try and treat every member of the club the same irrespecitve of their ability. We have a few "rabbits" in the club but I always try and be positive and encouraging and enjoy the round. Some people know their limits and don't want to waste time and effort getting better. They are happy playing rubbish golf and enjoying the game.

I've played darts with guys you know will never hit a double before closing and we use to write the leg off as a defeat before we started. We never took it seriously and these guys pay their money and so let them play. Same with footie and cricket.

I would stick with the game as long as i am enjoying it. I gave up when i had a lower handicap because i wasn't enjoying it.

No problem playing with our higher handicappers, as they have been good company, and haven't got moody when not playing well, like some low handicaps i know. ;)

For most surely it's about enjoyment. Of course I want to go as low as I can, but when I reach my level I'll carry on as long as I'm enjoying it. In fact if I wasn't enjoying I'd pack up even if I could still get better. Life's too short.

That's what is good about the handicap system. Even the 20hc who isn't going to get better has a chance of winning a comp on a good day.

Know plenty of players who have never got much below 20 and I don't have a problem with that at all. They try their rocks off every week but rarely does it all come together. They enjoy it though which is the important thing and have no real ambition to improve. If the enjoyment went than they really do need to jack it in. Just one golden rule though, as a mate of mine used to say "if you're going to hack, hack quickly".

Honestly I have no idea why somebody would play at 20+ for more than a 3 years. To be honest I have no idea why people still play off more than 12 at that point.

However I know a lot of people who have done and still enjoy themselves more than i do doing just that and are just as much a part of the club (if not more) as any good player.

I would love to have the relationship with the game some of those guys have.

It's something that everyone should consider because all of us will start to go the other way in terms of handicap eventually as the body refuses to let you play as you once did.

I hope I can still get enjoyment for many years to come, but it will happen sooner ot later :(

Sooner for some of us hey Bob? :p

Name you say?......it's Smiffy

you don't give much hope to those who didn't even start the game until things were beginning to wear out.

and bowls is out - too much bending :D

Surely, it is all about enjoyment not achievement?

If you put an artificial number on it, why 20? Why wouldn't you pack it in if you couldn't get to scratch in 5 years? It's a bit like saying I packed in football as I was never going to play for England. If you enjoy it, you do it. If you don't, you won't.

It is all about enjoyment, exercise, friendship and the challenge, in whatever order you want.

I will gladly play with anyone even a first timer and try to be as positive and encouraging as possible with them as many other people did with me when I started playing and again when I joined my club.

Reminds me of a story I was told by a club member a few years back. He was on holiday in the states and a game was arranged with a local guy who his hosts knew. He was absolutely brilliant. Knocked it round under par but apparently only played occasionally. Turned out he had played on the Tour but wasn't quite good enough. However he found he didn't enjoy playing just for fun so he had effectively given up the game and was thinking of quitting completely despite having loads of talent. I suppose for him it was about achievement rather than enjoyment with the result he ended up with neither.
