I am planning on playing in as many opens this season for two reasons, to give me more opportunities to reduce my handicap and to try to take advantage of a reduced cost to play some of the great courses we have here.

So with that criteria in mind, are there any suggestions?

I am looking mainly at within driving distance (2 hours) of Edinburgh and the highland area (HID has family up there so can be built in to a visit)-

Highland
Tain
Nairn
Dornoch
Castle Stewart

Around Edinburgh
Roxburghe
North Berwick
Cardrona
Dalmahoy
Longniddry
St Andrews course (there is a 3 day open on the New, Eden and Jubilee I think)
Turnberry

Some of the above probably won't do opens or, due to prestige, may have a handicap limit that I don't qualify for (I got excited about one in St Andrews which turns out to be a major amateur trophy) but it is worth looking into.

Is there anything I should be considering? Any suggestions of courses to look at?

North Berwick only has the North Berwick Cup which is a mixed foursomes weekend comp and the Links Golf Cup East Lothian which is a 4-day 72 hole event over other courses too.

Add Dunbar to your list.

If diaries allow I'm sure we can do a wee home and away at Duddy & NB.

Tain have 4 or 5 opens, + a 4 day, Nairn has the 4 day in Aug and the King which is 9 and below in July. Dornoch not sure but only a couple, one i play in is the Fraser Garner, which is 36 holes one on each course in sept. Castle Stuart don't have any as such only a locals thing in Nov but not handicap Qual, its not a members club but a pay and play and has no SSS.

I would look at Moray, they have a few and Nairn Dunbar again at least 4 or so.

If you in Edinburgh, get your season kicked off in March at Eyemouth GC. Nice course in a stunning location on top of the cliffs and already available for booking.

I also played Longniddry last year and that was a good day on a really nice course. If money is not a concern you could look at the East Lothian Links Cup but that involves a week off work for most but 4 cracking coures including North Berwick which is on my must play list so I'm looking forward to that.

And have a look on Golf Empire as many 2016 opens are already listed and more are appearing all the time.

Dunbar for sure and consider Ladybank also as its a superb golf course. Both these opens are buttons, both around the £20 mark.

Ian, I assume you are doing Dunbar again?

Jamie, the St Andrews comp you refer to is the Eden tournament. It starts with practice rounds on the Sunday then 2 days of qualifying over the Eden and New on Mon/Tues. Knockouts start on the Wednesday but if you don't qualify there are stablefords/medals on the Jubilee and Strathtyrum courses on the Thurs/Fri. It is a world ranking event

Jamie ,Royal Aberdeen on the 18th of September, Dornoch do one early in the season, a 36 hole in july and one in August, try if you fancy a drive Machrihanish they have the dates on there website already

Mmm - Machrihanish - there's a plan I hadn't thought of....Seems to be several Opens through the summer.

Drop me a message once the season gets under way and we can definitely get something arranged,

Tain is on the list but I have played it so it may be one of the first to fall away. I don't know that I would manage the 4 day ones, can't really pretend it's time away with HID if I play golf for the duration!

Dornoch and Nairn are the musts here though I would say.

I do like the look of the East Lothian cup but it may just be a bit too rich for my blood. In addition to the time out of work.

You sound like you may have played in this. Good tournament from your knowledge?

Yes twice and Merv79 on here won it 2012. Excellent competition, you get to meet some really great people over the course of the week and there is a parallel womens competition at the same time so that adds to the atmosphere as well
