Driving up from Yorkshire area to watch Scottish Open (so up the A1) in July. Wanting to combine the trip with a couple of rounds. Last year we stayed at Dalmahoy which ticked both the stay and play boxes, but driving round Edinburgh bypass at busy times was a right pain. Somewhere east of Edinburgh or further out along A1 would work better I think. Playing with an 11 yr old girl so nowhere with 200 yd forced carries or £300 rounds (although £100 acceptable). Was looking at Winterfield or Eyemouth to fit the bill for the play bit then stay nearby but any other suggestions or strategies for places to stay or play?

I wouldn't play Winterfield, played it last year and was not impressed.

Eyemouth, a definite yes. Smashing course and friendly clubhouse with great views. Make sure you go to the harbour at some point and see the huge seals. Watch your daughter's face when she sees the size of them 😄

Duns GC is a bit inland from Eyemouth, 30 minute drive but it would be a good course for your daughter and it's another welcoming club.

The above 2 would be a nice double header in the area, neither will break the bank.

There are some members on here who play on that coast so hopefully they will give their advice shortly. I'd stick with Eyemouth whatever, they may be able to advise a closer second course.

Accommodation close to Gullane will be very expensive.
Dunbar is quite close and there should be reasonable prices there.
There’s a travel lodge type place just off the A1 with an attached restaurant.

When we did our golf trip to East Lothian Northumberland we based ourselves in Eyemouth, which worked well.
It's weird at night though, isn't it? More than it's quota of regular drunks, oddly not that many pubs in the centre. I liked the course, would not stay in the place again though.

We have stayed at Old Abeerlady Inn and very good. returning end of July this year. Will be top prices when Scottish Open is on. Haddington which has a decent course and Gifford which is a great 9 holes. Newbattle May fit the bill and West Linton is very good.

Plenty of accommodation in Haddington but a very good friend stayed at The Golf Tavern which looks great from outside but think very carefully before going there

We went out to a couple of restaurants/pub dining which were absolutely fine and didn't encounter drunks on our visit. Not sure if we were lucky or you were unlucky as I've only been the once. This was in September 2023.

I live in Haddington, I would not describe it as having plenty accommodation, certainly in terms of hotels.

What about Goswick on the way up, i dont remember that being a long course or any carries of any note, well under £300 id imagine

Fair comment, apologies, probably around 5 but more than Aberlady and similar to Gullane. I should have added that the prices will be far more reasonable than Gullane/ Aberlady.

Just coming back to this thread to thank everyone for the really helpful advice.

We are now playing Eyemouth the day before the Scottish Open as we pass on the way up.
We are playing Gullane 2 and Gullane 3 on two different days during the event (G2 a bit over budget but I cracked when they said 50% off for juniors :D ). Playing the courses in the morning so will get over to watch how we should have done it at the Rennaisance in the afternoons.

Looking forward to it already!
