Three of us are on the first tee waiting for our #4 to join us. A two ball approaches. Thinking that they are a two ball, we say "just go ahead, we are waiting for one more". One of the two ball says "we are waiting for two more", the other guy tees off.

Then, our #4 arrives (30 seconds later, their #3 and #4 arrive).

What should we do? Do we let them carry on or do we go first ?

I'd say you've given the tee to the other group unfortunately. Also you could have said you made a mistake and could you have the tee back please. Did they hold you up at all or was the pace ok. If you went round in good time then theres no problem really

I think you've given it away.
BUt as long as the game flowed there's no real issue. Did you catch them up and have to wait?
If it was onlya friendly then I wouldn't be worried unless we got held up.

We went first. When our #4 arrived, we asked if we could just go and they grudgingly gave us the tee back. Quite rightly so, in my opinion. Their guy shouldn't have teed off until his whole group had arrived.

As for pace, we stood on the seventh tee as they walked up to their drives on the 5th hole.... We went round an empty course on a winter layout in about 3 hours, 1 hour less than their fourball.

You've offered the tee, out of courtesy, to the group behind as all your group were not ready to play. I'd certainly not have been impressed if one of the group teed off without all the players being ready on the tee.

Common sense would dictate that you politely decline the offer of the tee as your group is not ready.

I'd have done the same as you did Andy.

As dodger says, but would be unhappy when they announced 2 of there party were not at the tee.

They should never have accepted your offer to go first if they were still waiting for two people, so I think you were right to ask for the tee time back, as it happens it all worked out fine.
It sounds like it was a good job you didn't get stuck behind them.

Do you have actual tee times and if so I take it ya 4th man was late? If so you should have teed off without him and told him to catch you up.. ;)

We don't have booked tee times at Cawder. We had arranged a 1pm start and it was about 1:01pm when all this happened. I think the whole problem was caused by the guy teeing off prior to his group all being ready to go.

Glad we got away first because they were sooooo sllloooowwwwww

My first question would have been "Is it just the two of you?".

In your situation I'd have let them go first as you offered them the tee, and learn by my mistake.

Just re-read this and it reads badly I'm afraid.

Should read "dictate that they politely decline as their group is not ready"

Sorry folks

I just cant believe one teed off whe they were not all there !

I think it was a little arrogant of the bloke to tee off without his group all being there. What would have happened if he'd played, your mate turned up so your four were ready to go and his others didn't arrive for another ten minutes. Would you have had to wait as he's already played and claimed the tee. It seems you were wrong to give up the tee so easily but he was more in the wrong for playing without everyone else. It all worked out though
